For example, Mrs Doubtfire. Fun movie about Robin Williams pretending to be a crazy old granny.

But on reflection it's actually a pretty creepy stalkerish story about a man violating a court order and being a crossdresser so he can basically spy on his kids.

I don't ever remember being creeped out by that movie the first time around but I guess today's cultural environment throws a lot of shade on stuff like this.

Another example - in the Harry Potter books there's a whole subplot where Romilda Vane is trying to slip harry a love potion because she's obsessed with him. The whole thing is played off rather humorously, but really she's literally trying to date rape him that entire book.

Simpler times :(

i think people are just too sensitive these days tbh.

over the weekend i went to a comedy show (for a very famous comedian) with two friends, and after the show they were both talking about how they found joke X problematic because of it's conclusion, and how they didn't like joke Y because they found the sexual connotations to be offensive etc.

it's like everyone is turning into a bizarro verison of my hardcore conservative mother lol. they cant just experience a joke, movie, etc without pretending like the joke is specifically about them or w/e

Depends on the movie I guess. L.A. Confidential is still pretty bleak.

Independence Day was my jam back in the day. Dude was a captain fighter pilot with a stripper girlfriend and saves the world with a computer virus and sick piloting skills. He also missed out on a barbecue to do so.

What's particularly strange about that example is that the novel gives hand-waves Romilda Vane's efforts to drug Harry and her accidental drugging of Ron as silly high school hi-jinks, but then condemns Merope Gaunt and her use of love potion to conceive Tom Riddle. While it starts out viewing her somewhat sympathetically, by the time the story is finished with her she's the lonely, foolish girl who thought she could entrap the man of her dreams with the promise of a child conceived under the influence of love potion, who couldn't even take her of said child, and who died destitute and alone for her foolishness despite owning a priceless historical relic, and an irreplaceable magical artifact. Indeed, Tom Riddle's immediately apparent evil reads like the residual bad karma coming from the fact that he was conceived under the influence of love potion. All that judgement, even though her conditions are so much more dire, and the nature of her home life ought to demand reader sympathy.

I went to a university comedy show and it was just sad. The comedians were obviously frightened to do anything edgy so the entire theme seemed to be low hanging fruit about how dumb conservatives are or how racist X person is.

Goblet of Fire the book was 2000.

The love potion subplot was in Half Blood Prince. I remember that because Slughorn was Potions teacher that year.
