So I have a friend who've ive known for years. Very supportive, enough in common. But he is a pathological liar.

Not in a malicious way. But in a "I rescued a baby from train tracks today" sort of way.

Personally I'm a guy who values honesty. I know everyone lies but i also dont like to be mistaken for a fool who would believe this stuff.

Over time I've battled back and forth with the thought of either "its its not harming anyone. I guess its ok to let him have his lies" or "Man I feel like I spent 8 hours with this person catching up with a person who he's trying to pretend to be. I'm frustrated"

I tried to organize a intervention once. But he had one of the most outrageous reactions ive ever seen. Once he got a hint that we were planning to do it. he wouldnt see anyone, would sharply talk over anyone trying to bring up the big L word. and would only talk to people who would listen to him say I was a bad person despite the fact that it wasnt initially my idea and a group intervention means that everyone agrees there's a problem. (This is water under the bridge. but mentioned for context of what ive done to fiture this out myself)

I mostly let him live out his fantasy. but today he tried to text me saying he got a job at a prestigious place, with no tangible work experience, and hasnt had a traditional job in over a year. And i just said "I'm sorry man, this ones a little too high in the sky for me lol. Its hard to believe" and you can tell he wasnt happy about it (rather than you know.. providing some kind of enthusiastic proof like an e-mail or something)

I feel bad now. I still think this is just another one of his "look at how amazing and unique my life is" lie. But the conflict is real.

What would you do if someone who genuinely liked as a friend suddenly had this problem?

Honestly he sounds like a really cool guy who has a sweet life and went out with Megan Fox once and you're totally jealous.

My youngest bro is a pathological liar, so we just assume he's saying the opposite of what he's saying and everything is fine both ways.
