Maybe they all thought Anakin was dead. I mean, who in their right mind would connect Jedi Knight and war hero to the evil Darth Vader of the Sith?

I, Jedi actually had a good fan theory about this, whereby Obi-Wan and Yoda had secretly planned for Luke to eventually join the Empire to get off the shithole planet, Imperial intelligence would notice the last name and inform Vader, and the two of them would then spring a trap when Vader came to investigate.

But with the EU being mostly not-canon, maybe Skywalker is just like Smith in the Star Wars galaxy.

Even Obi-Wan. He left his student for dead. The only time Kenobi recognized Vader as Anakin was on the Death Star, close enough to sense.

you're half right

Obi-Wan thought that all goodness was gone from the man formerly known as Anakin Skywalker - he thought that the person he knew had been destroyed. Luke, through the connection to his father, was the only one who recognized the possibility for his redemption

Kenobi most definitely thought Vader was dead after Mustafar. Obviously he found out at some point, but only after the name Vader had started to get around again

Once he realized Anakin/Darth Vader was still alive (yes, he knew Anakin was Vader) he changed his name to go into hiding. Since Anakin didn't know his children were alive and didn't know their names, their named stayed what Padme wanted.

I still never understood how Vader never knew Leia was his daughter. I guess force-sensitive people were allowed to live if they weren't Jedi?

I think Qui-Gon's force ghost told him shortly after the end of Episode 3. In canon, it never specifies the moment he learns about that, but Yoda does teach him about communing with force ghosts (specifically his old master).

in canon I don't believe it's been stated whether Leia was as strong as Luke. Rebel would know better than me though
