I remember hearing about that place in the 1980s, but I haven't thought about it in decades.

Yeah, between 1994 and 1995, Kiribati decided to move the International Date Line around the Line Islands, putting the Line Islands at UTC+14.

Meanwhile, Hawaii, which is just north of the Line Islands is at UTC-10.
