I have the Galaxy S7 Active, which is a rugged phone. I have a screen protector (the glass kind so I don't notice it), but no case. I haven't needed one. More importantly, my wife hasn't needed one either and she drops hers a ton.
As a note, I often bring my phone into the shower to listen to music. It's never been an issue because the phone is meant to do things like that. I had a Galaxy S4 before this and it broke when I forgot I had it in my pocket and jumped in a pool. I was able to use it after it dried for a few days, but the camera never worked again. ... Otterbox, all the way. When my parrot jumped into the fish tank and I had to put her in the shower, it ultimately ended up with me being frustrated and just walking in there, fully clothed, with her on my shoulder. My phone was in the pocket on my shirt and still works (though I've since upgraded).

Evutec Karbon. Deviously named as it's kevlar with a carbon fiber pattern but it's super thin and strong.
