When I try to play N64 games today, I have to either slam the cartridge down hard or physically hold it down for like 5 seconds or else it won't boot.

Otherwise all that shit is the same.

Back when printers first became mainstream, people thought the use of paper would decrease since people could proof-read things on the computer before printing them. They were wrong however, the added ease of printing stuff made people more careless when compared to typewriting and ironically the use of paper increased as did the mistakes even though all the tools to prevent this were there.

Now we have the same with games and patching them through internet connections. You'd think games would be more stable than ever since any mistake could be corrected but instead this added ability to correct things later made developers careless and we now get games more broken then ever. Back then whatever you shipped was the finished product so games were a lot more polished.

Ironic how things work out.

I'd take this over having to deal with dodgy patches and unique-to-your-pc errors all the goddamn time, or updates literally every time you try to play the game again.

goddamn, I hate this "let's ship a shitty product and fix it later" mentality that has become far too common among game developers

but yeah, nothing beats the "put the game in and play" era of gaming

none of this "always online" and login/update/DLC shit

I remember that. In the mid 90s you were constantly hearing about the "paperless office." With a freaking laser printer that shoots pages out like a machine gun I probably print out more stuff now than I did then!

It's a combination of two problems. The contacts need to be surgical instrument clean, and the pin connectors wear out. If the game is clean and the pins are clean and it won't start because the pin connector is worn out, pushing the cartridge to the left or right will make contact and get it to boot. Many times, what would happen is people would pull the cartridge out, blow on it, put it back in and it would indeed work, but it was because the pins were now making contact, now because they blew on it.

*pops Morrowind in*
*spends 2 days modding it*

It's worth it though!

But yeah, it's definitely nice to be able to pop a game in and play it instantly. Most consoles these days are the worst of both worlds in that they lack the customization of the PC but also take ages at times with updates and other crap (with the updates often fixing some big issues and more or less being required).

The other good thing about the N64 is the fast loading times of cartridges compared to optical media like CDs. That was one disadvantage of the PS1 not using carts.

I *don't* miss memory cards though. They were portable at least, but also expensive, lacking in storage space and prone to breaking.

Which is weird when everyone's got 60-70 inch TV sets these days. Plenty of room for split screen multiplayer. I remember playing Goldeneye 007 four player on a freaking 13 inch TV.

This is so very true.

I hadn't bought a PS4 game since Street fighter 5. I bought Wolfenstein 2 and decided to play it for the first time at 9 PM or so. For some reason I had to update the PS4 firmware. Then install the game. Then update the game. Then update the P3 again (!?!). By the time this shit was done it was 11 PM and I was too tired and pissed off to play.

Also, N64 games had multiplayer. Nowadays it's online multiplayer or nothing.

Feel the same way about vhs. Put the movie in, it starts up, fast forward through like 3 minutes of previews and your movie starts. Some of these blu rays arent worth a shit and take 20 minutes just to play the movie.

Fancy and new means more shit. Everything was simpler but with fancy and new you get more junk.
