Terms of size? Mongolian empire easily and then Rome. In modern times? The last one was the British empire.

It could be argued very much so. But for great civs, long term contributions to society has to be a key point. Dont think we have as strong an argument as some of the ancient civs, partially because we've had time to reflect on their contributions. Ours are still ongoing.

Kinda of silly not to even mention China.

But I'm an ancient Rome enthusiast, so I will have to name them because of both their direct contributions, and the indirect influence of their successors.

The US has the strongest military but we don't have direct control of that much territory compared to other empires. We have a lot of allies, but they don't always do what we want them to do (like how Turkey is bombing the Kurds in Syria)

Control of territory probably isn't the best proxy for power today, as it might have been in the past though.

The establishment of the liberal international order, which Trump so despises, is the foundation of American power, and allows us to exert control far and beyond what our already vast resources would suggest. That's why even in Europe, a region richer and more populous than we are, the US is the dominant military power. The same goes for other highly sophisticated and wealthy parts of the world whether Japan, Canada or Australia.

If the US can manage to keep the institutions it created together for another few centuries perhaps it can truly be a nation that rivaled the great empires of the past, in terms of systemic domination, but it's gotta be hard to see that right about now. The system already looks shaky and it's only been 70 years.

I voted British but it is to be determined with America. Their stretch of cultural and political dominance from around the time of Henry VIII to the early 1900's was pretty fucking impressive. They also seemed to generally leave a fairly good colonial influence in place...I mean, America was Britain for a long time, for example.

Rome seems like a good choice but I always think the outer reaches of their empire were incredibly fragile. Outside of their inner core in western Europe, they were constantly dealing with tons of issues. If you just take them at their height though during the Pax Romana, it's a formidable choice - yet that period seems to be pretty fleeting. Not to mention how badly the empire was mishandled post-Constantine.
