- The majority of the game taken up by side characters who are not fun to play
- Sonic/Shadow levels are ridiculously linear with bottomless pits everywhere which don't work well with the wonky controls and gameplay. Which get worse as the game goes on.

There's like 25% of a good game buried in the garbage. But the other 75% is the majority.

Being honest, I think the issue of linearity all has to do with what you're doing in the game. There's actual platforming, dangerous enemies, and hidden tricks you can do to boost your score in Adventure 2.

Meanwhile in Sonic Forces you literally hold one button while moving forward and that's it.

Ive played both Adventure games on my Dreamcast recently and yes. Im sick of these new games that feel on rails.

why do people pretend that the hyperlinear corridor-over-pits copypaste hallway level design of sa2 is actually good? its only advantage to things like shadow and heroes and 06 is that levels were mercifully short enough not to become super annoying

"actual platforming" lmao, it's all holding forwards and getting tossed around by springs and boost pads for 98% of the sonic levels but the last 2% is just the most basic and menial platforming ever

Sonic just isn't a franchise that works in 3D. People like the Sonic Adventure games, but that's due to nostalgia. The Sonic (and Shadow) levels were very linear and had wonky camera angles. The non-Sonic/Shadow levels were chores to play. People want a Sonic game with just Sonic levels, but Sonic Generations and Forces show that leads to like a 3-4 hour game. I just can't think of a single way for Sonic's high speed gameplay to ever work in a 3D environment. And I think after nearly 20 years of trying, SEGA should call it quits and keep Sonic in 2D games or retire him.

It's still in the very early stages.

But when considering the Genesis games, I think this looks like a much better move into 3d than the stuff Sega has done.

Sonic Adventure wasn't even a Sonic game. Like, mechanically, it's not a Sonic game. It's just called one because it's called Sonic. But that alone is not sufficient authority.

If you look at a game like Star Fox Adventures, no one had a problem noting how it in many ways was playing like a Zelda game, despite it belonging to a different series. Now if Sonic Adventure was reskinned. Like let's say, alternate reality, Sonic Adventure comes out on normal release date, but it's not called Sonic Adventure. It's a new IP. So, no Sonic characters, rings are replaced with some other collectible, but other than these alt. reality changes, everything else remains the same. If that happened, would ANYONE look at...Whatever Adventure, and think "This is basically a Sonic game" the way people called Star Fox Adventures a Zelda game?

No. They wouldn't. Why would they? What does it really even have in common? At most, it'd be a game that copies Sonic's ring mechanic. But the way it actually plays is very alien from the original games, and all the focus on non-Sonic stuff would only further emphasis how thoroughly it is not a Sonic game.

And that game, is the template used for 3D Sonic games. That is where it all went wrong.

And now when they do try to make 2D Sonic gameplay in these modern games it still sucks because it doesn't play like classic Sonic did, because the people making it don't understand what Sonic was about (hint: it wasn't going fast).

Sonic Mania is an example of a recent Sonic game made by people who understand the series. If they had the talent for it, there's no doubt in my mind they could make a proper 3D Sonic game, because they are some of the only people left on this planet apparently who recall what Sonic games played like originally.

tbh, sa2 would've been fantastic with these issues fixed:
-somewhat more open level design for sonic/shadow
-better button mapping (though IDK if it could've been possible in the dreamcast, but still, the roll, lightspeed dash, andbounce shouldn't have been the same button, maybe roll and bounce, but not lightspeed dash)
-better camera, ESPECIALLY for treasure hunting
-less sluggish mechs (or no mech at all for tails)
-SA1's radar for treasure hunting

Sonic is a fast character. It would be nice if they took advantage of that with huge, open levels. They rely on bottomless pits, scripted sequences and grind rails too much.

I 100%'d it.

It's shit. It's really bad. It's laughably written as well. It's written like some prepubescent cringe-lord wrote it to vent about all his anger towards mom and dad. Let's make a game about the Shadow the Edgehog where he curses and rides motorcycles and shoots people.

The best thing the game has going for it, is the hilarious spectacle of its premise and writing and things like the relationship with the president.

It's also jarringly short. Like yeah old school 8 and 16 bit games were short like that too but you know pretty sure even Mario 3 was longer and also more replayable so maybe games in the PS2 era should be held to even higher standards.

It was the game that finally gave me the last final push to drop 3D Sonic. Sonic Adventure wasn't even a Sonic game and I only put up with it because it was my first game of the new console generation and I was wildly obsessed with Sonic games, loved the series, so hey, I'm a dumb kid with no standards, what do I care the game's a load of garbage?

Sonic Adventure 2 was better since it at least cut out a lot of stupid bullshit. Sonic Heroes was experimental but ultimately the problem is, unlike the previous two games, that made you play a lot of not main-game stuff to progress the main game's story, it just made you replay the SAME thing, 4 times, with progressively dumber characters, while also making the weirdly lasting stupid decision that chao should be done away with. So not very good. Then they fart out Shadow the Hedgehog.

I gave these games far more chance than they deserve. 3D Sonic games ride the coattails of the actually good original 2D games while crapping all over their legacy and how they played. They would NEVER be successful at all or even known about if they didn't get that free ride. They are meritless.

I played it on the Gamecube.

I also 100%'d it.

It's a bad game.

It also wasn't "very impressive" back then. Like, compared to WHAT? Compared to what, was Sonic Adventure 2 impressive? It's not even really impressive compared to SA1. It just has less stupid things in it, but what is there, isn't exactly much more impressive than what was in 1.

It exists in the same console generation that brought us things like GTA3 and Resident Evil 4.
