they still believe in the trickle down effect and that having more money will somehow cause them to invest in their businesses even more.

Even though all of that has been disproven time and time again.

Is it really that simple?

The democrats (liberals) do it too. They just arent as brazen about it. Donald trump is stepping up, saying "look, im gonna make you poor and us rich. Dont like it? Fuck off!"

I don't think anybody in power genuinely believes trickle-down. The goal is to give the rich more money. Trickle-down is just a story you tell those who aren't rich, like Santa or the Tooth Fairy, to get them to go along.

in a nutshell, yes. they want more and more for themselves and dont GAF about the long term consequences of wealth inequality or a select few hoarding the majority of assets.

why do rural whites vote for Republicans en masse then?

social issues is a big one -- the Republicans typically represent 'conservative social values' (ie forcing society to stay like it was 50 years ago) and generally represent the Christian right, which many rural folks tend to be.

Republicans have also classically gotten whites to vote for them by pitting them against minorities. Dylan did a good job of explaining this in his song "A Pawn in Their Game"

A South politician preaches to the poor white man
You got more than the blacks, dont complain.
Youre better than them, you been born with white skin, they explain.
And the Negros name
Is used it is plain
For the politicians gain
As he rises to fame
And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it aint him to blame
Hes only a pawn in their game

Because of fear mongering in other issues. "Democrats will take your guns away. Democrats don't care about classic family values."

Although the family values one is funny for how republicans get caught doing stuff they scream about.
