The shows are irrelevant to the movies.

Just watch the movies and you'll be good.

It's only 17 films in 9 years. That's. It even that bad.

tbf you don't need to watch any of the shows. even less would be the little shorts they used to do

so you're missing GotG 2, Dr Strange, Spider-Man, and Thor 3
only Strange and Thor will matter for the next Avengers. if you're familiar with Spider-Man, you don't need to watch the new movie. GotG 2 just confirms who Star Lord's dad is which may play into Infinity War, other than that they won't matter

Why are the shows broken up like that? It makes it seem like there are far more movies than there really are. Plus none of the shows tie into the MCU.

You don't have to watch all of the movies but I'd recommend most of them. The only ones I thought were outright bad were Thor 1 and 2, and Iron Man 2 and 3, and maybe Age of Ultron.

The rest range from ok to really good.

Aside from Agent Carter (please bring it back) I don't even bother with the cable TV stuff like S.H.I.E.L.D and Inhumans. The Runaways and Cloaks & Dagger look like they'll be a hard pass for me too.

The rest range from ok to good, with the first Iron Man and Winter Soldier being phenomenal.

Antman was pretty awful but it was just about carried by Paul Rudd. It felt like a bad overlong Paul Rudd comedy sketch.

it annoys me when they reference the movies in the shows through character or event descriptions(the "incident", green guy etc.) when you know that it's the most the shows will ever be connected to them, especially since some of them have definitely come to deserve standing next to their big-screen counterparts like daredevil.

FWIW Agents of SHIELD got really good towards the end of season 1 and onwards. A lot of people got turned off by the early episodes because there wasn't much of an overarching story, aside from "how is Coulson alive" and never gave it a second thought.

There isn't a single episode on any show that matters to the MCU continuity. They just pick up the scraps leftover form the movies and do their own little thing. Just watching the movies is enough and even those are pretty self-contained for the most part.

That's the only reason why I didn't mention it. You can feel the void left by Edgar Wright leaving the project but Paul Rudd is such a delight to watch. It's why I don't think Iron Man 3 is a bad movie because it's carried by RDJs performance who actually got to do things instead of being a floating head on a blue screen.
Despite the fact that they're pretty average movies at best aside from their leads charisma.

NewerMernardi posted...

The movies are serviceable, but they're nothing more than fast food of cinema. It's enjoyable but they don't do anything special with cinematography, generic plots with poor writing, music design with very little oomp, lazy acting (all the leads have been much better actors in other movies, ScarJo possibly giving the worst delivery of a line of the decade in Avengers), etc.
It's ok if you like them, just don't mistake enjoyablity with greatness.

Like, I never would have thought I'd ever see an Ant-Man movie in theaters. And they got him right too. The way he utilized his abilities while fighting. Marvel have a knack for making even the silliest character look badass on the big screen.

Ant Man was serviceable. Watched it once, no desire to watch again.

Same can be said of Iron Man 2, Thor 1 and 2, Dr Strange.

The ones I never get sick of watching are Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers, Guardians, Iron Man.

He might be coming across a little pompous but he's completely right, I think. It's quite interesting if you break down any of the Marvel movies how generic they actually are in every way, to plot, to filming, to score, to acting. There are so many movies coming out at all the time that do wonderful things with every part of the filmmaking process, but Marvel movies do just enough to get the point across and yet they're the biggest movies around currently.

There's nothing wrong with them and we all like them, but by the same token nobody is ever going to think of Katy Perry as a revolutionary musical force or anything.

Comfortable is the word. You go into one knowing you don't need to pay that much attention and you're going to see a bunch of cool shit.

Let's be honest, the "best" films are hard work. I watched Her the other week, that recent Spike Jonze movie. It was actually exhausting, mentally and emotionally, and my brain didn't switch off for like 2 days afterwards, and I felt very sad and bittersweet at the end. Nobody wants to deal with that shit if they just need some entertainment for the weekend.
