Speaking at the Credit Suisse Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference (as transcribed by Polygon), EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen addressed this question, explaining that it was an issue of Star Wars canon.

According to Jorgensen, putting in cosmetic options that were not in line with what players would typically expect will disrupt the canonical look of the series. Its an amazing brand thats been built over many, many years, and so if you did a bunch of cosmetic things, you might start to violate the canon, he said.

While he admits that theres some room for customisation like changing the colour of your lightsabre this is the excuse theyre settling on for why their lootboxes contain items that will help players succeed rather than cosmetic items. Hmmm. The fact that characters from different timelines all appear together at once, and the fact that Star Wars canon is a messy concept, does not come up.

Itll be interesting to see if Battlefront 2 gets a major shake-up in its monetisation model once microtransactions return well keep an eye on the situation.

Canon is a silly thing to bring up in regards to multiplayer, but if they'd thrown cosmetic items into the loot boxes and thus significantly reduced the chance of getting something useful then there would have been even more bitching

Damn, they really fail to understand the consumer. We don't want pink afros, we just want to maybe have a beard, or a paint job for an empire insignia on a shoulder pad, or any number of custom armor seen on clone troopers from the clone wars show.

As you've noticed, we weren't able to get the customization system into the game in time for launch. I'm actually having artists and designers walk up to me today showing me cosmetic stuff they really want to get out there. I think we have probably the best looking Clone Troopers ever made and I know players really want to customize them (I know I do). I can't really commit to a date just yet, but we're working on stuff and I believe it will change the game tremendeously on all levels.

Customization is something we care about. Believe me, people are constantly sending ideas around the office from all corners of the Star Wars galaxy. Clone Wars, Rebels, comics, movies, novels there are some really, really cool designs out there (especially from the Clone Wars era). Its on our list of things were looking at daily, and always top of mind. Stay tuned

This is the same company that has no problem nickel & diming people with lootbox cosmetics in their Star Wars MMO, some of those cosmetics being on the non-canon side of course. (Hell, the whole damn game is non-canon, it's part of the Old Republic EU.)
