Who is there to frown upon it? By definition, they lack the infrastructure to give you a grade or any physical metric of understanding, so the only reason people would think poorly of you would be if you went around pretending to be expert because you did half a freshman lecture course online.

Who's frowning? As an instructor I encourage people to watch lectures online. What I frown upon is when students don't show up to class because "I can watch the lectures online", then procrastinate and don't have the time to watch them, then fail the class, then complain that the on-site lectures were bad.

nobody takes "online courses", they take real courses and study remotely. they still listen to the same lecturers, and even skype with the same lecturers as on-premise students

youtube is not a replacement for a real education. at university, you will learn enough to filter the shit you will find on the internet, how to find real sources, learn enough to know what you know vs what you don't know, etc etc

im not saying youtube is bad. its just not a real replacement for a university or trade school
