The gameplay was always very simple, which both makes it hard to add new features that improve it and makes it feel like necessary now that handhelds aren't as restricted by hardware limitations. A new game would either come with a jarring shift in focus (like the dating sim elements in fire emblem) or would feel like more of the same, which isn't going to be a success story for a series that was already niche. --- And with that...pow! Not getting as much attention as the big three doesn't mean Nintendo doesn't care about a franchise.
