because the value could be many times greater than its face value because it has a fancy serial number. A serial number is on each bill and starts at 00000001 and ends at 99999999. To give an estimation of how many bills are out there, for the 2017 series bills that are gonna come out soon, there were 7.2 billion bills scheduled to be produced.

here are serial numbers worth decent money

number 00000001

low serial(under 100)
high serial(above 99999900)

full solid: 88888888

7 of a kind: 11151111

7 in a row: 72222222

ladder: 12345678

super repeater: 67676767

super radar: 51111115

quads: 33338888

radar repeater: 04400440

radar 69699696(i own this bill)

Also check the serial numbers on both sides. if you find mismatched serial numbers those are worth quite a bit of money. This one seems to have higher odds than some of these, too.

those are the combinations worth the most over face value. Of course value depends on bill condition and if there is any writing on it. Bill #1 sells for thousands of dollars in any condition, and all of these would be worth over face value in poor condition. Like a full solid could go for a few hundred dollars in excellent condition, but still sells in poor condition.

That isnt even taking into account you could have a massive printing error or older bill or anything like that.

But yeah, just again reminding people this is a free way to "play the lottery" and is worth your time in case you strike lucky and you find the extremely rare bill worth lotsa cash.

ebay. tons of listings. but it has to be worth it to resell.

if its super valuable, like a bill number 1, you get it graded and authenticated, then either sold on ebay or at an actual auction house.

chance of u even finding one, considering how infrequently we handle paper money nowadays is probably next to zero.

so why even entertain the idea

because it is possible.

you might not handle paper money now, but you could. you wouldnt be losing any money, just a little bit of time switching between accounts.

That "little bit of time" adds up fast. I highly doubt the opportunity cost outweighs the expected return given the rarity of the specific bills.

How much money have you made off of your bill searching, TC? And about how much time have you spent on it?

I havent made any money, but I havent really tried yet. it is definitely possible.

ive spent a lot of time on it, but i also work as a cashier. i do frequently carry cash on me and am always aware of the possibility.

look all im saying is some examples of bill #1 are wel circulated when sold for thousands. that means people had it and didnt know about it and let it go.

but i do have a lot of bills in my "collection" which I dont plan to keep. I do not have any of the super rare serial numbers above, but as a form of small-scale investing i set aside any bill i find i think might be worth a couple of dollars more than face value. if I dont like it I can just spend it.

As a cashier could and would you swap a 50 with a rare serial number with a 50 of your own without a rare serial number? Just a straight swap so you're not stealing money?

I don't know what kind of cashier you are so just assume it's from your cash register or from your stash if you work in a bank or whatever.

yeah i just swap my own money for the money out of ny drawer.

im saying this because the odds of finding a bill worth a ton arent high but just be on the lookout and know when you could have decent money on your hands.

just somethin to look out for

I havent touched paper currency in months. That serial number thing is kinda cool tho. Sometimes I check the date on change cause its kind cool to find a penny or something from the 1920s or so. That damn thing has been swapping hands for almost 100 years.

A little star at the end means that specific serial number was screwed up at the mint, and was replaced.

yes. now those are interesting. if you see one go to google and search star note lookup. you might have one from a low print run which can be worth over face value. i have ones from runs as low as 320,000 but runs of 80,000 exist

I don't check bills but I notice old coins.

Tonight, I nabbed a 1900 liberty head nickel.

The amount of people who've handled this coin is awesome.

1900 liberty head nickel. thats cool.

guy i work with found a 1906 barber dime in the coinstar return slot. thats pretty interesting. I found a steel penny in there the other day. so another bit of advice: always always check the coinstar reject bins...you can find crazy stuff there. even if all you find is modern clad coins you still made some money.

Im not saying this is going to replace your job, but you could have something valuable. im not even saying go get money at the bank, but when you have bills on hand spend five seconds(really) looking at the serial numbers to see if you have a rare one.

Yesterday I deposited 73 dollars i had in my wallet at an ATM to get out 73 dollars but in different bills. I didnt get anything cool, but since I was near a bank branch i go to anyways i figured why not.

not even saying you have to go through that much effort which wasnt much at all.
