I'd probably have to live paycheck to paycheck if I rented an apartment on my own. I just want to know what it's like.

Sucks. Especially when someone gets sick or something happens and you have to go into debt to pay for something out of the monthly budget. Like automotive trouble, prescription medicine, a cremation and urn, birthdays and holidays, water and plumbing purification, natural disasters, etc.

And that's just the past 6 months for me and my wife.

You have to be pretty frugal. Some stuff you have to learn to live without.
