Fuck my luck because my beloved budget Sennheiser HD 202 II's finally quit on me the day after all the deals! I was going to just replace them with the same pair but they seem to have spiked in price from the $25 I got them for to almost $60 on Amazon.
I'll probably wait for cyber monday, but that usually blows anyways, so I'll just ask for recommendations now. If the pair I had doesn't tell you, I don't want added bass and shit. I went back to my old pair of Sony MX310's and they sound like utter dog shit now that I'm used to the balanced and more neutral sound signature of the 202 II's. Is there anything better in this category and price range? I'm broke as fuck right now because of the holidays and don't really have any money to be spending on myself so under about $30 dollars like those were would be ideal, maybe up to $50 I guess if it's really worth the jump but I can just end up with a slippery slope there of "well for a little more I could get..." but it's worth considering I guess and there's an off chance I might find then a tad off or something come Monday but I'm not banking on it. --- "I have bitten both of my children" - IfGodCouldDie 10/22/17 ... if you cant cough up 140$ for dt990 pros then stick with 5$ trash until then, it's not even worth going half assed with a 30-60$ headphone. Just save up a bit more cash.

There was an absolute night and day difference between all the countless whatever headphones I had before the Sennheiser's. They had a well balanced and rich sound with distinct lows, mids, and highs. The bass might not have been to some people's preference but to me it was perfectly fine and I never noticed much issue with the highs except for at the very top end but it was hardly noticable most of the time if it all and those were only like $25 when I got them 2 years ago. I'm surprised they even made it as long as they did because I'm rough with headphones. I can't stand ear buds so I'll have them crammed in a bag, thrown around, whatever. I see no reason to invest more in something that I would treat like that when what I had was great for me and if I did get higher end ones, they'd be exclusively for home use where they're well treated so I'd still need something I don't mind throwing around more but still sounds good to me. And the most I'd ever go is the Audio Technica ATH-M50x's. I have noisy environments even at hone and regularly use them in bed with someone sleeping beside me, I can't have sound leakage from open back headphones. I'm willing to pay $60 for what I had if I absolutely need to and couldn't find them less anywhere else but I was just curious if there's something else in that price range now with a better value than them since it's been 2 years. --- "I have bitten both of my children" - IfGodCouldDie 10/22/17 ... Not sure if this is a satirical post making fun of audiophiles and elitists or not, but I can almost guarantee you that if I took a pair of Superlux HD 681's, a pair of Philips SHP9500's, and a pair of DT 990's and did a blind test that next to no one in the groups would be able to accurately guess the correct tier order of those products much less that each one costs double the last. The amount of people who are actually professionals and have the tools to utilize high end headphones and the amount of people who think they are is a pretty big gap. Shit and I bet for half the people, simply reversing the prices would skew how people ranked them. Don't get me wrong, the DT 990's are definitely better to a trained ear and possibly even some untrained ears, but you're dealing with lesser returns. The average Joe going from their shitty apple earbuds to any 3 of those would be such a big jump they wouldn't be able to tell them apart without having a lot of time with each. So acting like cheaper headphones are just trash that you might as well just use bargain bin $10 headphones instead of is laughable. Especially since a bunch if people buying headphones like the DT 990's are probably streaming over Spotify at 128kbps through their cell phone like "whoa you can totally hear the improvement and extra detail I missed before!" and aren't even using high quality source audio, a good receiver, and amp, or anything. Which stuff like the DT 990's is about the most you should ever get if you're not using those things I listed and even then you're not even fully taking advantage of them. You're basically saying that the top end of what the average persons range should ever be for headphones is actually the bare minimum and anything less is shit which is obviously absurd. --- "You need to lay off the peanut-butthurt and u-jelly sandwiches" - Neon Octopus ... dt990s are excellent affordable headphones at just above the entry-level status. I'm not telling him to buy some mid-upper range headphones (350-500$).
Going from a piece of trash to an actually good starter headphone is the biggest jump in quality you'll ever see, and if you can't tell the difference you must be literally deaf or listen to low quality garbage your entire life, even my friends who use those trashy portable cube speakers were impressed with the difference. ... dt990s are excellent affordable headphones at just above the entry-level status. I'm not telling him to buy some mid-upper range headphones (350-500$). In the grand scheme of the audio market as a whole the DT 990's are low end to mid range at best, but for what the average consumer is going to be doing, which is just plugging them into their phone for Spotify, their basic PC/laptop, their console controller, etc. Plus open back headphones aren't always practical for everyone, as amazing as a good pair sounds. When you consider all that, they're more on the upper mid range side for most people. If you're going past that and aren't using amplifiers and such then you have no idea what you're doing and might as well piss away the cost of going past something like the DT 990's for the most part because you're already dealing with diminishing returns as is where each dollar higher you go is gaining you less and less, so if you're not feeding them with the proper equipment then it's exaggerated even further. Most people don't need anything past the DT 990 range and wouldn't really be getting the intended use or value from going higher. And I disagree whole heatedly that the jump from something like the $60 Philips I mentioned to the DT 990 is a bigger jump then going from some no name $10 Walmart brand or some shitty included earbuds to the $60 Philips. Like not even close. Don't get me wrong, it's a notable jump but nowhere near as significant. You either don't know just how bad those bargain bin, nothing brand headphones are, you don't know how good those $60 Philips are, or a combination of both. I'm not saying it's not worth it to go for something in the DT 990 range, I actually believe that's the perfect price point for getting a quality bang for your buck set with detachable cables and replacable earpads that can easily hold up for a decade if taken care of properly. But again, I'm just saying to act like anything lesser than a DT 990 is trash is silly. Stuff like those $60 Philips are quality open back headphones that if blindly compared under average person conditions of playing Spotify and shit off a cell phone, many people wouldn't really assuming you're dealing with a pair that cost less than half of the other one and many people would opt for the cheaper option. And there's things under $60, while not as good still offer a solid listening experience from the average persons perspective. If that's really the smart thing to do or not is another story, because with cheaper sets you usually get shittier build quality and no detachable cables that could cause the thing to only last 6 months or potentially years, it's a crapshoot but generally with higher end stuff you don't have to worry about that. Plus if we really want to talk legitimate average person, I'll be the guy who's hypocritically criticizing an elitist while making a somewhat elitist comment which is that most people are idiots in regard to good audio quality. Most people have no idea how an equalizer works and would buy Beats by Dre for obnoxious prices just to get muddy overpowered bass and pretty looking headphones. I'm all in for suggesting something like the M50x's if open back isn't an option for you or something like the DT 990 if it is something you can afford, will take care of, and keep for awhile. Someone like TC who says he'll throw them around and needs closed back headphones would be stupid to buy DT 990's. --- "You need to lay off the peanut-butthurt and u-jelly sandwiches" - Neon Octopus ... So far there's only 1 recommendation and Fluttershy shitposting :/ Just get the Sennheiser HD 206's which are just rebranded 201's. The reason 201's and 202's are jacked in price now is because they were discontinued this year. The 201's and 202's sound virtually the same except slightly less bass in the 201's but also much better comfort. At the time of this post the 206's are $29 on Amazon with free shipping and are probably the best you're going to get that are closed back and under $50. --- "You need to lay off the peanut-butthurt and u-jelly sandwiches" - Neon Octopus ...
