Over medication with mental illness, would be my guess.

Specifically because it seems that most, if not all, of the recent mass shootings have been perpetuated by people on anti-depressants or people that have recently come off anti depressants.

Their are more societal pressures on the modern person and the future seems bleak. Then you add in the fact that people with mental illnesses and really heavy depression don't like to get the help they need and they interact with likeminded people online all the time which makes their mental state even worse. They feel like they have nothing worth living for and see all the attention that mass shooters get in the media and figure that it's a good way to end their lives and also leave their mark on the world before they die. It's easy for them to get guns due to the lax laws. Pretty sad

The US has the most people incarcerated out of any nation, has the most gun crimes out of any developed nation, and we even have this whole issue with immigration/refugees where Americans don't want them here because they have far fewer instances of law breaking or criminality in those populations than exists within American society at large. Americans are just cultural predisposed to violence and bloodshed.

These people are typically pretty insignificant in the world and their own social circles. Instead of just killing themselves and have a two sentence mention in the local newspaper, they take dozens of people with them. They are immortalized as a household name. Everyone knows who they are, where they worked, even what their interests were. Someone to give them a second glance is all they ever wanted, and the media makes sure that everyone knows who they are.

You don't see them in low income areas. Sure people get shot, sometimes several, but it's always over money or turf. You only see the kinds of mass shootings in middle class areas. It's been suggested that people are no longer connected to society in such areas. Seems like a decent hypothesis to me.

pretty much everything plays a part.

the media and glorification of mass shooters combined with wide spread internet that covers every little thing. (imo this is the big thing)
lack of proper warning signs for those in isolation, depression and over prescribed medication.
large influx of gang and drug crime
poverty and intercity struggles
immigration and racial tensions

and it can go on. the US has ALWAYS had a gun culture (and statistically gun ownership is at an all time low for the last 26 years) and its always had its fruit cakes killing people, but its never been anywhere near as bad or as frequent as it has been until the the last few decades. the current political climate and fractured partys isnt helping. guns really arnt the issue, they are just a small part of a sea of shittyness going on in this country currently.

American society is awful to those living in it, we praise focusing on the individual self over the collective community, plus our capitalistic tendencies are the cruelest (guns are a right but you're effed if you need life saving medicine even with most plans of insurance).

he was a pilot and had bomb materials in his car and home. for all we know things could have been a LOT worse.

a dedicated psycho will find a way to kill a lot of people. if not a gun then a bomb, truck, poison and the list goes on. one of the worst domestic terrorist attacks in this countrys history killed and injured far more people than the vegas shooter did and it was done without a gun.

umm do you not know everything that happened with the aurora shooter? they found home made explosives rigged through-out his home. he could have thrown them into the crowd along with the tear gas bombs. many of these mass killers tend to go to guns because they like to enjoy the thrill and make it last longer. sandy hook is arguably the worst mass shooting in the countrys history, but also one that could potentially have been avoided through proper care and not letting someone who was clinically off his rocker (that was both expected by the parents and physicians) around firearms.
