They laid off their entire company on Thanksgiving eve with no severance, medical, or PTO payouts, shut down the game a month earlier than announced, and now it's coming out the company knew this was coming for a month but banned employees from talking about it. All because the CEO is a sexual predator and decided to let the company die and fuck everyone over rather than stepping down and letting Disney buy the game.

They should be hitting up Microsoft and Sony. As far as I know they've been okay about it. Microsoft moreso than Sony.

Is it even legal to just mass fire and cancel all their severance and medical?

It would be cool if Disney stepped in and like... at least paid the PTO or provided a severance package to those affected.

They probably won't though.

I knew the folks lower on the totem pole at the company got screwed over, but I didn't know it was *that* hard and lube-less.

And here I was thinking it was terrible than I wouldn't see playable X-Men characters for several years... that said, I'm tired of getting burned, this marks the last Marvel game (especially an online one) that I'll be playing for a long-ass time because I give zero fucks about anything or anyone tied to the Disney's MCU now.

Thankfully from my understanding, since it's in California PTO and back pay will be among the first things paid out after bankruptcy. Still sucks, though. I'm wondering if Disney might do something since they did technically breach contract unless they had a promo clause.

I suppose this also means I should go ahead and uninstall it now. I was planning to keep it for that last month to squeeze out what fun I could, but if it's going to be dead by tomorrow, there's no time left to do anything.

Ugh, I wish there was a way of scrubbing my Steam account of the achievements/time played, it's only going to serve as a bitter reminder now.

transcript of discussion with devs on discord:

Player : @MichaelMayhem one thing i've NEVER been able to fathom, if the end goal was to get parity between the PC and Console, WHY did the console release so vastly different? Especiaally in regards to items and crafting

MM : oh man....
hold on a sec

Winterthur : I just don't think we paid enough attention to what was being changed witrh crafting overall to say no?
Items were changed through due to changes in Powers/ect and @MichaelMayhem is about to cover that.

MM : @Maggot it was intended to be the other way around. Console parity into PC.
It just took a looooot longer to get there than what was planned.
and there's reasons for that...
why the hell not.

Winterthur : Sure. Well, here it comes folks.

MM : i dont know if i caaaan
so... when you build a 'new' game with an existing one below it with 3+ years of players, everything's a lot harder to build. You have to take into consideration what every single action you do is going to affect a player's Live accounts. What happens if you change this item, delete this power, delete this item, delete this entire map/story mission
And... something happened... that made us kinda not care about that for awhile.
So we started taking an axe to things. And then we needed to undo all that, and that turned out to be a nightmare.

player : what happens if you just delete the whole game
sorry too soon

Winterthur : Funny story @Dude85632
Basically people were kind of wrong about the PC contract and it had already expired. We were renegotiating it while creating the console version and basically this axe almost came to PC about 6 months ago
So when we thought for sure we were going to be closingn the PC version
we started to blow up those systems to improve them for console
We were about 3 days from informing you guys about the wind down on PC when it was renewed

MM : it was a sudden "it's saaaaved!", and while most of the office was celebrating... I knew what damage we'd done. I knew there was no going back.

Winterthur : and when we got the news internally we basically went
"Well Trash Panda! . This puts a new wrinkle in everything we just blew up"

MichaelMayhem : that's why it took so long for the PC to get the console's changes. We had to work backwards to make it actually work

MissNoodle : I love that we can finally tell all y'all what went down

Winterthur : Well, when we thought PC was dead
We stopped asking "but what about the pc people with these items ect"
since that question stopped existing
and in turn we blew Trash Panda! up trying to make it better
Every time we wanted to change something we had to think about what you guys had previously earned before that

If there is any truth to that, it cant be the whole story. That guy didnt own the company. Thats a decision for the board of directors.

I'm still not sure that demanding the government get involved was the best way to handle loot boxes. Maybe if we just, you know, stopped buying them, the companies would have taken the hint. Now we are going to get government agencies springing up all over the place to choose what is and what isn't allowed in video games. At least more agencies than we already have.

The media had finally backed down on them too. They accepted that its a medium that can be made to appeal to any age group. Now we are crying because 'including loot boxes is encouraging kids to gamble' (I still think this is the most ridiculous claim and don't see how it's gambling).

I mean, the controversy over battlefront is justified, even if any attempt to get loot boxes regulated or banned is laughable, but this is so much worse.
