Current Events > After beating Fallout 1, I decided to play Fallout 2. *spoilers*

First time playing it. Currently waffling on my build.

I don't see any glaring holes in that build, but I'm going into the game relatively blind. I also flitted briefly with making my character a melee fighter, but in a world of energy weapons and .233 bullets, I don't know how viable that is for the first time.

As far as I know, Charisma is still a relative dump stat, based entirely around how many NPCs you want to recruit at the same time. 4 Charisma will still allow me to get 2 NPCs (and Dogmeat), which is nice because I had 4 followers in Fallout, and they got in the way quite often in the final stretches of the game.

Anyways, thoughts?

I'd put more points into Strength and Endurance since you're going to be using mostly melee in the early game

also Lockpicking isn't as prevalent as it is in the 3D games so you might as well tag Melee Weapons or Outdoorsman instead

There is also a giant mod that you can download for free, fallout 1.5 resurrection.

The writing and translation is wonky but decent, and quest design, location, combat encounters, factions, storylines are all new and pretty good.

There is also fallout : nevada which is basically fallout 2.5 but the translation isnt 100% complete yet.

Followers are way better in FO2. You can push them out of the way as a free action, directly interface with their inventory, give detailed instructions no how to act and which weapon to use, etc.

You made it past the hellish part now onto the heavenly gaming experience. I think I beat the game with just one character in my party but damn that last boss WILL tear you apart when you reach it.

Hi-ho the derry-o~

I came across two groups of highwaymen fighting each other. Being the fresh little lamb to the wastes that I am, I hid in the tent and waited for them to finish fighting it out. At the end of it, one group was superior to the other, and had four members remaining, in varying degrees of health.

I was hoping I'd be able to escape without them noticing me, as I had no armour, and my best weapon was a sharpened spear. No such luck, as they aggroed from across the map. So, through the power of save scumming, I found which dead Highwayman had my best chances for survival - in this case, a 12 gauge shotgun it 16 shells.

A few tense moments later, and a couple of reloads, I managed to kill the four remaining Highwaymen and loot the rest of their bodies. Disappointed that I wasn't able to get any armour off of them.

Because the only thing print screen did was take a picture of my desktop without the game. This was more convenient than trying to fiddle around with in-game overlays.

I also need to remember to reload after encounters, because the game doesn't do for you.

Your build looks fine. Personally, I'd probably tag energy weapons instead of lockpicking, just because lockpicking isn't terribly useful (and you can save scum). You're really only stuck with melee weapons until the first town, at which point you can get a pipe rifle and 10mm pistol, and then you never have to use melee again. There's also like 20 or 30 free points that you can get super early, which makes melee viable even with low skill.

Fallout 2 has a greater challenge to it, and I'm seeing more variety in random encounters already. Things escalate quickly, though. Everything is so much more aggressive in FO2, and I'm running into Enclave patrols at level 2. So much for random meandering. >_>

Fallout 2 is probably the darkest and most violent one in the series. There's one part you'll get to run into the "final boss" and his Enclave Assassination team in the wild and what they do to civilians will boil your blood. When you do run into "final boss" in the wild just run like hell.

I think this is just if you wander into certain areas.

Fallout 1 definitely did it by giving you super mutant encounters if you wandered too close to their base.

Oh man, the companion interface is light and day better than in Fallout 1. I can see what they're equipping and adjust their combat preferences to suit my playstyle. I just got Sulik, so he should be able to beat the tar out of shit for me.

If you play as a woman you can solve some quests by using your body (if you have high charisma). It's kinda messed up at times lol

F2 is my #2 game of all time. atmosphere isnt as good as the first one, but holy shit is the gameplay better and greatly expanded.

Yeah, they greatly improved it. A few of them actually have non-combat skills. Like there's one with a massively high repair skill who will repair items for you.

Heads up, in general the further south you go the rougher the random encounters get. Generally safer to go east first.

That said, save scumming your way to San Francisco is a VERY good idea

I gathered that, considering this walkthrough I'm following outright says to go from your starting village down to San Francisco, so you can do some quest to get some power armour. As this is my first time playing the game, I chose not to ruin the integrity of the developer intended challenge, so I casually ignored that and continued with the walkthrough to the next settlement.

I mean, I agree with not breaking the game completely by grabbing the basically free end game gear. I still recommend save scumming your way to San Fran for the city its self. There's some late game quests that it's good to start early, a better tier of shops, etc. Totally worth it even if you don't want to cheapen the experience

I wouldn't recommend going to SF on a first playthrough. Maybe a second, but the challenge is enough that you'll have more fun if you scale naturally with armor/weapons than if you cheese it and get some of the best stuff off the bat. Doesn't hurt to put off the quests either, the game is designed around SF being late-game.

Just play through how you want TC, that's what FO2 is designed around: ton of roleplay and build opportunities.

If you're seeing Enclave guys you're wandering too far to the south. Well, unless you're trying to get Power Armor early.

Went and got a copy online for cheap

Nah, haven't gotten that far yet. I was unhappy with how NPCs treated my character (seriously, this ugly fucker in The Hole won't sleep with me for $200?), so I restarted so I could add a couple of points to my charisma.

I'm now wondering if I shouldn't just build my character around getting skill books before spending skill points on those skills. It's why I haven't increased my small guns skill any beyond the one book you find in Klamath. >_>

Maybe so, but everyone is reacting much more positively to me with 2 extra points of charisma. The big-nosed one in the bathhouse didn't even offer to have her burly, moustachioed employee give me a sponge bath this time.

Update: I got the dude in The Hole to pay for the honour of taking my character's virginity. I see the restoration project I installed also added in a quest that was cut, as I am now helping Mom open an orphanage in The Den.

Just fyi, those little jerks steal from you when you walk past them. They'll take it to the nearest shopkeeper and fence it, or it'll be in their inventory. Lost a good gun that way and for the life of me couldn't figure out how, well until after the fact. The restored content mod makes it to where after you finish that quest, they no longer steal your stuff, which is handy.

Yeah, the guide I'm following made mention of it. It also told me of a workaround, where if you enter into combat, then use your movement to walk past them, then disengage combat, they won't try to rob from you.

I haven't finished fallout 2 yet. I never even got that far because I keep starting over, which I plan to do again. I got carried away with a save editor and put a lot of points in gambling to get rich and even got two mega power fist for mc and sulik.

Anyways, thoughts?

Companions are much better in fallout 2. They even level up as you gain levels so they wont suck in endgame, but they only gain levels if they are with you when you level up, so it's best to get them when you're still low level.

Best thing about doing that, you don't end up with child killer or turn the entire town against you including some companions.
