If the Earth is really flat, how are you supposed to go to space and what are you going to do there? Gravity would constant in magnitude, which means no escape velocity, and it would be constant in direction, which means no orbit.

The "r" in the gravitational force equations doesn't mean radius. It denotes the distance between 2 objects you're determining the force between. All objects with mass exert a gravitational force.

Well by flat, I'm also assuming infinite in area. Otherwise it wouldn't be flat. I guess he might think it's like a piece of paper or something.

Since the formulae for gravity and electric field are pretty much the same, the gravity of an infinite plane should be constant regardless of location.

I highly doubt they think that, as he would have dug a hole or something. I think we need confirmation of what they believe. Wiki says the conventional flat earth belief back in the olden times is that the Earth is a disc.

In any case, the strength of the gravitational force exerted would still weaken between an object with infinitely large area and the escaping object as the distance between the two increases. So yes, there would still be an escape velocity.
