I wondered about that, too. I first heard the term, horseradish when I was little, and thought it was a kind of radish for horses. Later, I learned what it actually was.

From the french radis de cheval and the german meerrettich.
rettich is from latin radix and means root. meer is from mahre (female horse) from meer (sea or lake, meaning root that was brought from overseas or grows near the sea or lake) or from meer/mehr (which means more or bigger, so big root). It could've been big root in old german and mistranslated to horse. Mistranslations like that are common, and horse radish is a cooler name than big radish. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The German name is meerrettich (sea radish).
