I think its kinda unnecessary for some shows and sometimes the 1st opening is better than the one(s) after it.

I feel like it's a thing they originally did thinking fans want more openings/songs and it just became a tradition after a while.

It is kinda dumb though.

idk I often like second openings better because in a bunch of shows they get more intense due to having set up the scene more. Usually characters that aren't in the first OP show up in the second one.
