Bitcoin: Most popular currency coin, useful as a store of value and to buy altcoins

Ethereum: Developing platform with a strong future ahead of it

Litecoin: Coin with better technology than Bitcoin but with less adoption. Faster confirmations and lower fees. Developers are working on swaps between BTC and LTC so the two should be linked as the most popular currency coins.

Vertcoin: A currency coin that is designed to be as decentralized as possible, has a good community and team behind it

Monero: Currency coin designed specifically for privacy, needless to say serves an important function that will be sought after in the future.

Basic Attention Token: Crypto meant to be used to monetize advertisements, applications are endless. May appear on Coinbase/GDAX which would lead to a massive increase in value and popularity

Bitcoin Cash: A gigantic piece of shit that serves only as a hedge against Bitcoin volatility. I own zero and I hope it dies a painful death, but a smarter investor would invest in both BTC and BCH to reduce volatility in their portfolio.

Siacoin: Decentralized cloud storage, could be immensely valuable in the future

Walton and ChainLINK: Cryptos developed to better integrate existing companies and data into blockchains.

I'm about 40% BTC, 35% ETH, 15% LTC, and 10% in alts. I'd suggest 50% ETH, 30% a mix of BTC, BCH, and LTC, 10% XMR, and 10% remaining alts. Bitcoin isn't going anywhere any time soon but there's a stronger future ahead of Ethereum than it.

Coinbase/GDAX and Gemini are US exchanges you can use to buy BTC, ETH, and LTC.

1. Register an account

2. Verify your identity

3. Link your bank account (or debit card, or credit card)

4. Buy cryptos

That is all it takes to buy cryptos and own them on exchanges. However for full security and control it is ideal to move the cryptos off of the exchange and into a wallet you control, like a Trezor or Ledger. They are little USB like devices that store your cryptos offline and safe from attacks/governments/whatever.

And if you want to buy altcoins you need to transfer your BTC from the exchange to an altcoin exchange website like Bittrex or Binance. Sending Bitcoin is as simple as scanning a QR code and entering an amount you wish to transfer, so you'd send let's say 1 BTC to a website where you can exchange your BTC for other alts like XMR or Dogecoin or anything.
