Someone recently asked me this.

Do you take offense when people ask that in a certain tone?

I remember for example a topic here recently where someone mentioned that the underlying connotation of the question towards him was to ask "What type of Asian are you?".

It's just a misguided way of trying to tactfully ask your ethnicity, I don't get why people get offended by it so much. "What ethnicity are you" just sounds super personal.

The implication of the question when asked in a certain manner has deeper connotations, such as assuming that certain people act a certain way and if you're acting in a manner different (better) than that, then they are curious how.

More blatantly, some people have outright told me that I'm not black because I don't act the way that they think black people "should be" acting.

It's just a combination of curiosity and ignorance. I wouldn't be offended by it, because the intent i'm sure rarely is "let me piss off this guy and offend his race" more than it's genuinely someone asking a question interested about your background.

Your implication is that it's offensive because you are from the US, and i guess you're trying to say that people only ask you that because you're Asian or something and that's somehow offensive. But people just ask each other that all the time regardless of the race of the person they're asking or where the person lives that they're asking.

It literally doesn't mean anything other than, "I'm curious about where you grew up and would like to know a little more about you.". If anything at all it indicates that a person finds you interesting enough to even bother learning basic information about you, and you choosing to take that offensively only indicates that you're simply an asshole.

People ask me this all the time and I enjoy the question because there's like half a dozen different ways you can answer it. It's not something to be offended from.

Actually, I was parodying how Americans (such as yourself) take offense to trivial things regarding perceptions of freedom and justice lol

100% guarantee anyone who purports to find that question offensive is pretending.

It indicates they're drama queens, brainwashed, and narcissistic.

Because it's generally only asked of people who aren't white. It's not inherently a bad question, it's just that it often carries the implication that anyone who isn't white has to be from somewhere else, even when they have no accent and no visible signs that they are not from wherever you are. It's a contextual thing.

If I suspect someone is from another country, such as if they have a thick accent or something like that, and I'm curious, I'll just ask 'Oh, are you from here?" or "Where you born here?".

What they're really asking which country you're from because to them you can't possibly be from the US. I've seen it happen to coworkers in the past when I was in retail. It is pretty irritating.
SoCal.

We're hispanic/whites 50/50. The one half has been in the US for over a century. What I've always had happen to me along with my brothers is in school and at work is having to talk with the illegal or 1st gen mexican students/coworkers. And they ask do you speak spanish. Like fucking always. If not immediately then in the first few days. To which the answer is always no. Then they get a real stick up their ass with you because it's as if how dare you not know the mother tongue and they give you attitude from there on. Like it's an affront to them because they think you're acting better than you are.
It's like fuck you. It's a similar feeling of contempt to what the TC is getting at just a different question.

Being mixed race, I get this question constantly. Its easy to say its not offensive, but by the millionth or so time being asked the question (when no one else around me is) it does get old.

If I hear an accent I can't quite place, I always ask where they are from... and I have never used a "tone" and they have always politely answered.

But if there is no accent.. then.. yeah, would be a bit weird... and slightly rude to some people. Wouldn't personally bother me...
