It's only taken me over 2 years to finish it. Books 7-10 were absolutely brutal to get through, especially 10. It would take me months just to get through one and then I'd take a big break. I read 11-14 in the last few months though, since the pacing was a lot better. The books get a lot better when Sanderson takes over as the writer, imo.

All in all, it was a great series but a lot of filler and a crazy level of detail that I really didn't think was necessary, while some other events and characters get forgotten.

The ending was pretty fantastic, and also sad on many levels. It was worth reading through.

Has anyone here read the series? What did you think of it?

I want to read it someday, but IDK... Id probably get burned out, especially hearing about how bad the middle gets. The Sanderson ending is certainly a good motivator though

I was always leery because the original author died. But you say the ending is good, I may give it a shot.

I am currently finishing up The Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson, about halfway through Mona Lisa Smile. Its been great.

my favorite series, and I'm long overdue for a reread.

I like 7-9 more than a lot of people do, but agree'd on #10. that one was brutal (especially after the end of 9). it also didn't help that that was where I caught up to Jordan, so my first wait for a new book was for #11.

Sanderson actually writes better than Jordan so it gets better. Jordans writing is actually not that great imo. The lore is awesome but he uses the same characteristics to describe things over and over to the point where you just get completely fed up. And the descriptions are crazy long, where Sandersons writing just flows a lot better. The story is good and still worth a read but it can be burdensome.

What kind of books are those?

I burned out at 10 or 11 I think. I got tired of entire chapters dedicated to the descriptions of the brocade on a dress.

Hmmm, The lore must be REALLY good if the writing is that bad, because it is pretty famous. I'll prob check it out.

You may have heard of the first book in the trilogy, Neuromancer. Its a highly influential cyberpunk book from 1984. The best way to describe them is a combination of The Matrix and Blade Runner (The Matrix ripped off so much from Neuromancer he should have sued: The internet is called the Matrix, a central location named Zion, the main characters Case, Armitage, Molly Millions = Neo, Morpheus, Trinity). But its far more intelligent and deep than The Matrix and focuses on people and AI rather than kung fu. The writing is excellent. Gibson does a fantastic job of combining the cyberpunk landscape with down to Earth realism, great characters, and describes scenes beautifully. Sometimes some of the technical jargon can be hard to follow (characters speak about tech and events like you know what they are, usually it can be figured out) and he has a habit of describing an event out of context, and then going backwards to clarify what happened which can also be jarring. But his writing is really great. Very intelligent. The 2nd and 3rd books feature different characters in each in the same universe, dealing with the fallout from the major events in the 1st book with some guest appearances from the 1st book characters.
