Valve model.
They got 2 out of 3 most popular online games over the past 5 years.
One is free and the other is 10$.

You can't buy any items that give extra stats with real money, only cosmetics.

So the games are easily affordable for anyone, there's zero pay2win stuff and the devs are still rolling in money because people buy huge amount of cases.

Wouldn't Maps fragment the community?

Probably, but I don't buy into that nobody should feel left out rhetoric, that corporate thralls like yourself parrot constantly in defense of microtransactions/lootboxes

As long as they're reasonably priced, there should be no problem

Elite: Dangerous is my ideal.

$60 base game.
$30 expansions (full-fledged expansions not piecemeal DLC).
Microtransactions that are 100% cosmetic, range in price from $1-$12, and don't involve any RNG. You get exactly what you pay for.

Eh I think that leads to these maps not really being worth it either since they'll never have as large of a userbase as the base maps. It also leads to me spending more money after launch considering I'd never spend that much on microtransactions.

Honestly it really wouldn't surprise me to see a lot of these games having a F2P mode.

Halo 3 did it best. $60 game with $10-15 map packs. When new map pack releases previous map pack goes free. Campaign with 4 player coop and arcade mode. Map editor included with theater mode that allowed you to make fucking movies if you wanted.

No microtransactions, and armor that you can unlock via gameplay achievements only.

How did we have this back in 07 and now we get nothing for $60?

This sounds good but when I looked it up apparently only the Heroic Map Pack and Cold Storage went free. You still need to pay for the Legendary and Mythic map packs.

However it's all free now. I think they did it for the 10th anniversary.

Overwatch is perfect. Sounds the same as what is being described for Halo 5 as well. Let people spend all their money on lootboxes or whatever as long as they are obtainable otherwise and don't give a gameplay advantage.

Overwatch isn't perfect. This slippery slope you're allowing is what's killing gaming.

Perfect would be if Overwatch removed the option to buy crates with RL money.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I believe all these people buying lootboxes help fund all the new characters, maps, and modes that the Overwatch team provides for free. I'm okay with that.

I was fine with how call of duty did it back in the day. Map packs, and weapon camos unlocked through challenges

What was the last multiplayer game that did this? I honestly can't recall.

I prefer the cosmetic system. People pay top dollar for brand name bull s*** with ridiculous designs and logos. It translates into games well enough to where some people dont care as long as it all functions the same.
