Basically, they've perfected a way to control compression ignition of lean mixtures, with the added benefit that the engine can still achieve ignition via traditional spark when necessary.

I'm fucking excited, I only wish I worked for Mazda instead of Ford

Not really. It's more like the shift from carburetors to fuel injection. Hybrid powertrains are definitely the future, but until we reach a point where infrastructure and battery technology can support fully electric vehicles, we'll be keeping the gasoline engine around.

It totally can support it though. Well, not this exact instant, but it's very easy to accommodate since literally every business operation has electricity.

The oil industry is of course the biggest reason it hasn't happened and that it didn't happen 25 years ago. I won't particularly call the oil industry a force of evil though, since they're the largest economic force in the history of mankind simply protecting their best interests. When they crash, the whole world feels it.

so what does this mean?

Better fuel economy and emissions. It's a more efficient design to boot.

More MPG and power, with equal or less emissions, using current technology and infrastructure.

Ideally, I would want a gas engine combining Mazda' SCCI (article in the OP) with Koenigsseg's Free Valve technology.

Gasoline is ignited via piston compression rather than spark plugs (like a diesel engine) making it more efficient.

Eventually. Doesn't mean we can't improve what we're already working with.

Why not use all those resources and money to try to get ahead of the electric curve? If every manufacturer went balls to the wall with electric cars, wouldn't that force and foster innovation?

Industry suppliers have said that electric majority propulsion is a minimum of 20 years out, and that's assuming there was a true 100% day and night devotion to research and rolling out the product. In reality, that number is closer to 50 years.

I'm on board with Mazda's line of thinking, to increase what we have now while we work towards eventual electrification.

I bet they'd find a way if they stopped producing regular gasoline cars...otherwise they would go out of business. They're the same businesses that have tried to kill the mere idea of the electric car for decades. Fuck them. Ugh lol

Electric isn't going to catch on until new vehicles are less than 15K, or the battery tech progresses enough to make second- and third-hand cars functionally viable.
They have to become proletariat-class vehicles.
