It's more like the shift from carburetors to fuel injection. Hybrid powertrains are definitely the future, but until we reach a point where infrastructure and battery technology can support fully electric vehicles, we'll be keeping the gasoline engine around. It totally can support it though. Well, not this exact instant, but it's very easy to accommodate since literally every business operation has electricity. The oil industry is of course the biggest reason it hasn't happened and that it didn't happen 25 years ago. I won't particularly call the oil industry a force of evil though, since they're the largest economic force in the history of mankind simply protecting their best interests.
