Touhou 16 was disappointing so I'll wait for the other ones

Did the series ever add interesting mechanics or is it still just a straight bullet hell? By interesting, I mean something like Radiant Silvergun's weapon system or Ikaruga's light/dark system.

Most of them have their own gimmick mechanic though they don't really vary much in terms of gameplay. One has actual UFOs that can be summoned and destroyed for power ups/extra lives etc.

Some of the boss phases ("spell cards") are pretty neat and clever. One superboss has a move where the screen becomes segmented (circular, clocklike) and as you have to move around in it, your movements are tracked and turned into stationary bullets in the next section. It's inspired by a polygraph. The character who does is is psychology-oriented.

As for touhou 16, I like it. Only managed to beat it with 1 character and in easy difficulty. I'd have to say 14 is my favorite and Seija is my favorite character even though she's hated for fucking with the controls/screen lol. Such an amusing troublemaking troll-like attitude she has.

The reason why the fanbase got as putrid as it did is because someone stole Bad Apple and made an Undertale video out of it. When someone Pointed out it's a touhou song, the guy responded with "nobody knows what touhou is and it fits undertale better anyway" and then a nuclear war broke out.

Anything awful to do with the undertale fanbase effectively has roots in that moment

Edit : the worst part of it all is Toby Fox is a huge touhou fan.

Hmm, never heard about that. I like touhou and undertale. I'm sure I've heard bad apple before, but it's not one of the few pc98 tracks that stood out to me.

But yeah its great there's a 2hu on steam, and patching the game into english is quite simple and theres a billion sources online (including the comments in the store page) on how to do it.
