Hidden camera footage recently made public revealed a decorated World War II veteran died after fighting for air while a pair of nurses laughed in front of him.

James Dempsey on Feb. 27, 2014, repeatedly called out to staff members at Northeast Atlanta Health and Rehabilitation before he fell unconscious, gasping for air all the while.

Nursing home staff found him unresponsive just before 5:30 a.m. and it took them nearly an hour to call 911, according to state records obtained by WXIA.

Dempseys family, who sued the facility in 2014, declined to comment, citing a settlement with the nursing home.

Former nursing supervisor Wanda Nuckles testified during the trial that she rushed to the 89-year-old veterans room when she learned hed stopped breathing and performed chest compressions until help arrived.

Nuckles did not know shed been filmed at the time and the clip directly contradicts her account, which she said was just an honest mistake.

Instead, the footage shows nursing staff repeatedly start and stop Dempseys chest compressions.

When the responding nurses struggled to get Dempseys oxygen machine to start, Nuckles can be heard laughing with them in the background.

Maam was there something funny at the time? Mike Prieto, the attorney for Dempseys family, questioned.

She responded: I cant even remember all that, as you can see.

Retired nursing professor Elaine Harris identified several violations, including failure to respond, failure to assess and failure to act.

In 43 years of nursing, I have never seen such disregard for human life in a health care setting, she told the news station.

Attorneys representing the Atlanta nursing home attempted to block WXIA from releasing the footage, but in the end dropped its appeal with the Georgia State Supreme Court.

Both Nuckles and another nurse were fired, but not until nearly a year after the incident. And they only just turned in their licenses in September nearly three years after Dempseys death.

A spokesperson for the Georgia Board of Nursing could not confirm when the state became aware of the video, but the boards action did come on the heels of receiving a link to the video.

A spokesperson for the nursing home, owned by Sava Senior Care, in a statement wrote they were saddened by the events which occurred three years ago before going on to note it has new leadership and the leadership team and the staff have worked very diligently to improve quality care and the quality of life for our residents.

The nurses where all black, and the patient was white. They were laughing at him. This can certainly be questioned as racist

Who here has ever worked in a nursing home? I am not condoning the actions of those individuals but have worked in nursing homes for four years so have a different perspective than most here.

The business side of that industry is horrible as it is basically sick and old people warehousing, and all the companies are run by business people with MBAs that do not do any patient care. The facility will take everything of yours that they can: pension, social security, house, etc as well as the monthly Medicare or Medicaid payments from state and federal governments.

The work is busy, stressful, and both physically and emotionally draining. People are always shocked by how many 16 hour shifts I would work weekly. Taking care of people who are sick, in pain, and unable to help themselves due to strokes/tumors/TBAs/etc is something that most of you will never experience. I have had many jobs in the past that are physically draining but CNA is the only job I have ever worked that also drains your kindness, caring, and compassion. I have prepared a few dead bodies to be seen one last time by their family, and this was somebody that I was caring for months or years and while sad also knew that they are no longer suffering and in pain and fear.

Plus if you work in a lockdown dementia unit it's a whole different world in there. The majority of residents should be in a mental facility but can't since it would be dangerous for them there as 30 year schizophrenics will beat the **** out of any grandparent on a bad day.

Nurses in nursing homes spend 80-90% of their time dealing with pills and paperwork while under constant pressure and stress about the bottom line from the higher ups. CNAs work like dogs while being paid even less than their hospital counterparts. Trying to have some humor, even grim humor, is a coping mechanism to try and deal with the daily reality of the job.

And if you feel it was worse because he was a military veteran I ask you how many of you served in the military and how many of the homeless people that you drive by every day are military veterans? We will all die someday and at least he died indoors unlike some of the people he himself served with.

tl;dr Nursing homes are a ****ed up business yet are a completely natural extension of America viewing healthcare as a business instead of a human right.
