My friend lived in Qatar and said that everyone talked big religion during the day and then went and secretly drank together at night

It's just as hypocritical as any religion

Thing is Islam has gotten more radical in sixty years so that happening in the 1950s is no surprise.

Islam is not any more particularly radical in the modern age than back than lol, it has always been a very Conservative leaning religion.

Conservative isn't the same as radical. There's certainly more extremism today than before, although it's not unprecedented going way back in history (i.e. the Barbary Wars where African pirates told Thomas Jefferson the Quran gives them credence for attacking US ships).

I think it is debatable whether in increase in extremist actions constitutes a wider trend though in political/societal thought violence often only thrives in circumstances where it can be regularly carried out (ie the collapse of many semi stable Governing state in sub sections of the Islamic world for instance)

I think the willingness to enact vs just possessing an ideology is a different tier of radicalism in itself.

Yes but it doesn't deny the fact that they were having cola. And there's even a mcdonalds in every location.
