I'm glad I stuck it out at this point. I was annoyed that they initially told me that I'd be full time after 6 months and they just ended up extending my contract over and over, but... I've gained great experience working here and they've treated me really well outside of the whole contract/full time thing.

Hopefully everything turns out well and I'll be brought on full time soon.

I can't believe you're a badass network engineer and yet still just a contractor. A little screwed up tbh.

This, while I believe you desrve to be treated better, at least they got around to hiring you full time, it'd better have a good reason, like financial wows and not greed.

Anyways, best of luck man. Hope you can score a lit contract.

Congrats OP. I'm in a similar boat that you were. I'm an engineer (civil) and I'm currently under contract at a firm. My boss says that he has no full time positions right now but he is more than happy to give me more contract work. My only issue is that I really need the job security and benefits. I don't know how long I should stick it out for.

You should apply for other jobs in the meantime. Schedule as many interviews as you can.

Trust me, there is no worse feeling than thinking you're about to be picked up for a full time, the recruiters imply that they will pick you up for full time after your contract, you do your best and when your contract ends, they forget you ever existed.

Are you getting by financially just off your contract work or do you have a second job?

Yeah, I'm making more than enough to get by. Realistically, as the sole network guy at my job, I can only have one job. I could try to do a second job if I wanted, I guess, but it wouldn't work out well. If I'm at that a second job afterhours and my main job has a network outage or some network emergency, I'm the only one who will be able to diagnose it and get it fixed. I wouldn't be able to tell my boss at my second job "Hey, my other job is having an outage so I gotta go. See ya." Just wouldn't work out, lol.

Yeah, it was a big point of contingency for me a while back, but... I stopped and took a look at my situation.
- 1) The reason why I was such a stickler about being hired on full time and so annoyed at not being hired on full time after 6 months was because I've been a contractor before and was treated like shit.
- 2) This job has treated me very well even though I'm a contractor.
- 3) This job has been the experience of a lifetime, and is pretty much the perfect spot for me with my current skillset.
- 4) This job has an awesome culture. My boss is cool AF. My boss's boss is cool AF. My coworkers are cool AF.

So essentially, I don't really mind being a contractor any more at this place. Yes, I'd still like to be hired on full time, but I have no complaints about my job. I've never had no complaints about my job before I worked here.

I know some folks at Indeed told me they are hiring. They are on my co-ed soccer team and half my team is Indeed employees. I think they bring me job descriptions every week.

If all doesn't work with you and this position, I might can toss some opps your way.

Nice, I'll keep that in mind.

What they've told me is that it's a "budget approval" thing. I am pretty expensive and all, so it at least makes logical sense.

That makes a lot of sense, I didnt really think of the logistics of having a second job. Will you see any salary increase from being an employee or will it all be worth it in terms of stability and benefits?

Assuming everything goes through, there will be a salary increase. I essentially just looked at what I made the past 12 months and asked for a small increase from that since I won't be getting overtime any more if they hire me on. Even if they just offer total earned from the past 12 months, I'd take it. I get benefits right now because I'm technically an employee of the recruiting agency that placed me at this job, but... The benefits will be better if I get hired on.

I only had to wear a hard hat when our new office was under construction.
