Nope, that type of thing would have pissed me off as a kid. We are raised to be too consumerist, but I'd be mad if I settle for a boring cooking class instead of that new game I wanted.

Maybe the execution needs work, but the idea is a charming one.
I'd totally have accepted a family vacation or a splurge at an amusement park as a kid. This is kind of like giving your teens concert tickets. Of course the tickets don't last, but the memory of the experience will. Obviously this can differ from kid to kid. Depending on the child, horseback riding could be amazing, or disastrous. Cooking classes are almost certainly a bad idea. Hosting a party and getting a bunch of their friends to come over and make ice cream and pizza could be a runaway hit.
