Just announced. Nearly 80% participation, 61% yes, 38% no.

I'm really glad that the yes side won.

But it's non-binding.

Save the celebration until the government votes it into law.

It's great and I voted yes but for Americans this just means that the population has voted for it, now it actually needs to be addressed in Parliament.

Essentially we just spent $100m for a poll that we didn't need. Just make it legal and stop treating gay people like second class citizens.

But - great news. Equality wins.

Yeah, it would definitely be better if it was binding, but it's a good first step. It would have died right away if no had won, and hopefully legalization follows the vote. The people have spoken and I just don't see a reason not to legalize it now.

Their parliament should've already legalized it. Who cares about the populace's thoughts when addressing equality rights for a portion of the population that amounts to maybe 5% at max.

I hope any politician who continues to attempt to shut it down gets massive blowback. Pauline Hanson I'm looking at you.

Who am I kidding though.

I've got to admit I was feeling nervous about this so I'm glad the result is as good as it is

However this has been such a massive waste of money. Even under budget I think it's going to cost like 100 million. And I live in rural NSW, I've seen it bring out the worst in many people here

Okay let's give them the exact same rights as straight people.

If gay people can't marry then they indisputably are being treated like second class citizens.

True, but at least they have no excuse now, this was their last gasp to take the decision out of their hands and pass off blame-if they're not going to take the public's opinion then it's going to end up in a cat5 shitstorm
