More like liberal policies since the LBJ administration, but you still get a trophy for participating, I suppose.

While we've had plenty of so-called Republicans and Conservatives in both houses and the White House over the years, the reality is that for the past 100+ years we have been ever expanding the role of government, regulations, social programs, and other things that liberals absolutely love. They have gotten their way for the most part.

It is absolutely not true that social programs and regulations have been expanded over the last 40 years. The 80s and 90s were littered with cuts and deregulations (by both parties) that haven't come close to being restored since. Look at welfare reform in the 90s, financial deregulation right up to the recession, airline deregulation that began in the 70s. What's bigger now than it was when Jimmy Carter took office? Medicaid, maybe? The president's ability to wage war without Congress' approval, probably. Oh, the drug war, too.

But if we're talking about a timeframe of 100 years, yeah, there's more of those programs and such than there were in the 1910s. For the better, I'd say.

Also, I don't know why I was mentioned.

Uhh no. It was globalist rule under the bush/Clinton dynasty, capped off by obama. Our country is getting better every day with Trump in office. The guy can't stop winning.

As a college student who isn't in engineering or computer science, life seems pretty bleak. Makes me wonder what things would be like if I had been born like 40 years ago.

What's your major, and why did you pick it/why haven't you changed it? If you actually believe you're getting a degree with no job prospects, and you still haven't changed majors... what does that say about you?

What a delusional and factually wrong thought process. As mentioned, social programs have been completely slashed since Reagan and regulations have been neutered along the way as well. And it's not restrictive of one side, but to pretend that these things have EXPANDED is mind bendingly stupid.

Your whole "LIBERALS HAVEN'T WORKED WITH US AT ALL!" belief completely contradicts reality...

How many social programs and regulations do we have compared to 1850? Yeah, that's what I thought. You lose.

Do you think America was better in 1850 for its lack of programs and regulations?

You arbitrarily assigned the 1850s as "the golden age" in the country. You're also ignoring the cuts in programs that rose after WWII during the Reagan years to prove some point that Ronald fucking Reagan wasn't a "true" conservative and actually a liberal.

Tell me, in your mind, when was the golden age of America and what exactly defines a conservative? Because if I'm going to ultimately disagree with both theses no point in continuing this discussion

Yes. People solved problems on their own more often instead of relying on the government.
