This board has grown way too hateful of muslims these past few years. I find few reasons to continue to socialize with a group of people that constantly attack my beliefs and practices. I've done nothing but defend western values and try to help others but y'all continue to push this narrative that my beliefs and practices are incompatible with western culture. It's incredibly taxing emotionally to constantly read hateful posts targeted at me and other muslims. I recognize that maybe even half the board doesn't act this way but it's enough users and posts that I feel unwelcome here. And despite being able to chill here for maybe 12 years, nowadays I just feel more tense and frustrated than before I logged on. So for these reasons, I can no longer justify sticking around. It's just not healthy for me mentally, especially with all the stress that's been dumped on me from med school.

Just remember this place (hopefully) isn't representative of most people. One of my close friends is a pretty devout muslim. My atheism/agnosticism has never been a point of contention between us, rather we have nothing but the utmost respect for each other. I've learned quite a bit about his religion, so I try and weigh in these topics on CE as much as I can to try and dispel some of the ignorance. But I'm just a single voice.

I don't blame you for not wanting to expose yourself to the toxicity though. I truly think it's just run-of-the-mill ignorance. They don't have a muslim friend to have more philosophical conversations and a bit more "insider" perspective to contrast it with the caricatured view the media feeds them. So to them, it's a big bad boogeyman. And they unfortunately equivocate a few terrible examples of a local culture, attribute it to religion, and generalize it universally.

Good luck with your studies!
