Gorgon- you're right mycro, definitely fitting for Halloween. Especially a part in the middle that very much reminds me of John Carpenter, which is cool. Outside of that, eh. Morgan's Horse Farm- yep, this is a hans zimmer-ass movie score alright. Good for setting a scene, and I haven't seen the movie in years but just seeing horse reminds me of that fucked scene with the horse on the ferry. Time Moves Slow- some nice, smooth, chill shit to zone out to. I like it. Tiger Tank- hell yea I'll always take some grunge-y indie noise rock Overtime- I appreciate a good electronic track, and this is one of those. Vocals are the right amount of high pitched without being obnoxious, beats are bangin, catchy as fuck The Diaz Brothers- mountain goats in general are usually hit or miss for me, this is a good one for me. Very simple but effective, mercy for the diaz brothers. I really like the way he says diaz brothers, it's kind of weird but makes it stick. Good Night Sweet Girl- James doesn't have a typical "good" voice but it carries emotion, and I especially like the start of the song for that. The quieter moments are better for his voice, but the instrumentals aren't bad on the louder parts either. Half Sister- instrumentals are super solid, vocals are vaguely joy division-esque. I like the ending of the song with truth and the half sister. Lake Pontchartrain- oh man I used to jam Love Me Dead when it first came out. Dude has an infectious voice, same rings true for this song. Beyond Oblivion- I'm really happy with how this whole album came out, some have stated it's their best since Shogun back in 2008 and I'd have to agree. Possibly the best song off what is possibly their best album. The driving energy is infectious, drumming is great, and John sings with real feeling, as always. (2nd) The Sword - Freya I like the opening guitar riff - very Rage. Also some Zeppelin in there later on. Not really into the vocals though. (3rd) Speedy Ortiz - Tiger Tank The weird, kinda dissonant chord progressions grew on me. Aloof, quirky rock jangler - gorgon Descent, inoffensive little instrumental. Cool beat and synth effects. Ludo - Lake Pontchartrain A ska storyteller-style song that isn't Date Rape? Huh. Found it obnoxious at first, but grew on me and has more personality than most of the rest. He Is Legend - The Garden Intro sounds like it's either from the live action TMNT or the youtube 'Shreds' series. Dislike the vocals but the double time part onward at the end is pretty good. BadBadNotGood - Time Moves Slowly Nice and chill, but uneventful Ghost of the Robot - Good Night Sweet Girl Got a good grunge feel at first - opening is kind of 'House of the Rising Sun'-sounding. I like it better before the plodding drums come in, at which point it kind of sounds like a darker, more awkward Weezer song. Knower - Overtime Would make a good DDR song. Like most of their stuff this song evokes a classic 70's sound that never seems to wither with age. It comes off as super authentic too, that counts for a lot. Jangler - Gorgon I think it's 11/4 in the first half and then uhh...like /4 or something cheeky. What is going on in the second phase of this? Help me out here. Once again I have been stumped by The Marvelous Musical Mysteries of Mycro's Metric Mischief. Expressionissimo. My favorite part was the creepy syncopated bells. The Ring - Morgan's Farm Love me some film music. IMDB tells me The Ring was scored by none other than Hans Zimmer, fuckin' guy gets everywhere huh? Good ol' Zimmy Zim-Zams. Haven't seen The Ring in ages so I don't remember this piece contextually but it works as a theme of mounting dread (get the violinist to play sul ponticello and you got yourself halfway to a horror score, works every time) - it's strikingly similar to Arvo Part's Fratres, which ended up getting used in There Will Be Blood. I'm gonna have to put this on my netflix queue now. BADBADNOTGOOD - Time Moves Slow Oh damn this hit the spot. Oh my damn. Mcflubbin my man this is the shit, killer contributions from every bandmember including the Future Islands singer whose distinct voice channels something between Baby Huey and Fine Young Cannibals. But the drums and organ is where it's at for me, they really make this tune something special. I slept on this band far too long! Speedy Ortiz - Tiger Tank Bring Grunge Back! Give it to me detuned and deranged and derivative because I grew up in the 90's and I'll never let it go. Okay actually I'm not super hot on this but it does give me the impression that Speedy Ortiz has other tunes I'd enjoy more if I just checked out one of their albums. The Mountain Goats - The Diaz Brothers I dig it, it's very contemporary musical theater, very Supertramp, a spritely tune contrasting with dark lyrics. All about that ironic juxtaposition. In this case I find the high positive energy of the instrumental prevails over the lyrical subject matter, which apparently is about the characters from Scarface. Ghost of the Robot - Good Night Sweet Girl It's a bit slow-paced, kind of a "first song you FC on guitar hero" vibe but that's not necessarily bad. I can't say I agree that I love listening to James Marsters singing though, he sounds a bit warbly in some parts. They try to kick it up a notch with a big finish but it doesn't muster enough to get me on board - I think it would improve a lot of it had some spicier guitar tones going on. That's what was missing. Protomartyr - Half Sister Dire beginnings - oh dang we talkin' about Palestine? This got me locked in a dark funky groove and every change was a good change that built to a satisfying climax. Loved the textural packages, it had all the cool guitar tones the previous song left me wanting. The singer has kind of voice that irritates me so it's unfortunate that he's so prominent - he's great pitch-wise it's just that certain type of high-strung storytelling melodrama puts me off. And I guess the tempo isn't my speed (what a fuckin' first world complaint), that jacked up ska backbeat always makes me feel like I'm trapped in a bouncehouse with a bunch of kids who are bouncing too damn fast. That lake has a pretty top notch name though. Trivium - Beyond Oblivion I hate to say it but this did nothing for me. None of it in particular offended or excited me, it was just sort of there. I might just be metally fatigued at the moment.
