I understand the hatred toward DLC, especially when it feels like the original game is incomplete without it.

But these are characters you can unlock just by playing the game.

Except you're not paying for DLC in the game. You're paying for expedited progression. Your character progression (its level) is literally based on how many cards you have and what their quality level is.

Am I allowed to compare it to mobile games? Because Star Wars Galaxy Of Heroes is a massive grindfest to unlock characters. Some characters you can't even get without literally buying. And also has a thousand different currencies. And I hear 0 outrage about that.

I understand that mobile games have a different business model, but I feel like the same sentiment applies. You wanna play as Darth Vader, but you literally can't until you accomplish a ton of really hard/time consuming achievements.

Some guy on Reddit figured out that it would take like 40 hours to unlock one hero or something like that. Its clearly designed to incentivize you to just use real money. But its your money, if you wanna buy a game just to spite random people then you do your thing, mate lol

It's an entirely different system, because in Battlefield, you can unlock things from Rank 1 for the guns and classes that you're playing just based on what you're playing. If you're a Medic, you're not going to unlock sniper rifles for doing the Medic challenges. You're going to unlock more guns for your Medic class. If you get kills with your M16, you're going to get unlocks for your M16 (new scopes, grips, etc.).

Battlefield 1 has "loot crates" but realistically they drop at a rather reasonable pace, and ultimately they only contain weapon skins that are usually barely different from what the base weapon model looks like. You do get puzzle pieces randomly that unlock specific unique melee weapons, but the melee weapons have analogs in the base game that you can get without paying cash and with minimal time investment.

In Battlefront 2, regardless of which class you play, you open crates which entirely randomly give you cards used to augment classes. It's entirely possible to get cards for classes you rarely play, which means the main class(es) that you do play remain at the same "class rank".

Obviously the death threats are an extreme, but people have a mob mentality where when the loudest voices are mad, everyone just gets mad and don't fully know why.

Even if microtransactions weren't a factor, the card-based "progression" system is one of the most convoluted things I've ever seen in a first person shooter.
