The setting, I like.

But like with most alternate Batman stories they don't really do anything with it that's fun. Even derivative stuff like including jack the ripper can still be interesting or entertaining if it's done right.

The comic was good, and it's success is what inspired DC to continue with the Elseworld line of books then and into the 90's. I remember liking Gotham by Gaslight, but I haven't read it in a while. And that animation for the movie doesn't even do justice to Mike Mignola's sequential art.

I also suspect it to be unnecessarily violent for the sake of it. Not that that the book was by any means targeted at kids, and dressed up as an "adult" novel. But if The Killing Joke movie, and infamous Batgirl/Joker variant cover are any indication (since I haven't read Batman since before Damien) it sells, so why not.

Also in that scene of Batman descending on Jack the Ripper and you see a hint of Ripper's face; looks like the same face of Mad Hatter from Batman: TAS.

The Elseworld series is well received?

Well received enough that they continued making more of them. Especially within Batman. But Superman had a few and Wonder Woman even had one. I do think Gotham By Gaslight was far more liked and well done than any other Elseworld. But they were still selling enough to print at the time.

It's a good setting for Batman. Unlike most of the Elseworld setting that were made just to print a book and make a buck, Gotham by Gaslight fits the Batman persona perfectly. But then Gotham City is a very gothic and Victorian city set in modern times too. So it makes sense.

It is a cool setting, that much is true. I actually get more Zorro vibes from the costume and lack of the whites of the eye, which is funny considering.

I can get that. Zorro and Batman's costumes are similar in the cape, black/dark colors and the intimidation factor of both; hiding the eyes but not the face. There was an Elseworld too where Batman was a knight, and I think they transformed the costume well into a suit of armour. I want to say there was once where Batman fought with a sword too like Zorro.

IN batman brave and the bold show there was a zorro batman so I assume they took it from the comics, maybe even an elseworld story as well!

That maybe what I am remembering more than the comic itself, if there was one. I watched the whole series on Netflix a year or so ago. Whereas I haven't gotten out many of my comics in many years.

I also remember knight Batman, Frankenstein Batman, and vampire Batman. That one was similarly in batb. Good stuff

I only tend to like alternate stories if they're one shots and humorous in nature. Or at the very least written by Alfred, those are always fun.
