You could actually explain why you don't like the idea. Personally, I think ALttP looks much better than PH/ST. ALBW isn't quite as ugly as the DS games, but it basically copied ALttP's aesthetic anyway. Everyone is tired of the NSMB look and I do think SMW also looks better.

I just think there'd be such a strong stigma against making a new Zelda or Mario in 2D that the idea is laughable. It'd be seen as lazy/incredibly outdated.

But hey, a guy can dream, and you're a guy, so...

Uh, maybe in 2007, but sprites are cool again and they will remain cool for the foreseeable future. Granted, most of those games nowadays are indie titles, but Mega Man 9 proved that big name developers can pull it off too.

I prefer sprites because I am old.

Also, any more NSMB games are going to be seen as lazy, so doing sprite-based 2D would be a good risk for Nintendo to take. Other than the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, Mario hasn't really explored significant style changes for over 20 years. I'd really like to see Nintendo take a shot at giving a "main" Mario game a makeover.

I'd still like to see it with Zelda too, but it's not as crucial because Zelda is constantly doing stuff with its art style.

Um. Mega Man can get away with it, sure. I can imagine a modern Mega Man game could get away with anything, given how out of focus the franchise is nowadays.

I would love a new sprite-based Mario, Zelda or Metroid.

Or a sprite-based re-make of Zelda II. >.>

there's actually no way they could remove motion controls from the game without fundamentally altering the game, which is not something that they would do because it would require a complete rewrite of the engine.

HD Ocarina would be great, but did you actually get any new information for that, or are you just spitballing now?

he's just spitballing

skyward sword would make the most sense logically, or maybe switch ports of WWHD and TPHD. since y'know, nobody owned a wii u

it'd be strange if they didn't do something for OoT's 20th anniversary but that's not for another year still

That one was just spitballing. But given that 2018 will be its 20th anniversary, I think an HD Ocarina is now in serious competition with Skyward Sword as the game being remastered.

It sounds kind of like they are building a new engine, so I don't think it would be WWHD or TPHD. SS makes some sense (maybe they want to remove motion controls, so they decided to just rebuild the game entirely), though I think OoT is even more logical. They could have done an HD port of it already but probably didn't because N64 graphics are too dated and low-poly to put a good HD shine on. It would look so much better rebuilding everything.

Why would there be a stigma? 2D games can be aesthetically pleasing and they can be well received if they're fun.

Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, and Sonic Mania are some of the most popular titles on the switch.

i dont think there would be a stigma but it would be fairly inconsistent with nintendos current direction of creating dense, detailed games. theres a place for 2D but like you said, there are many high-quality 2D games coming from third parties (and making the switch attractive to third parties is a part of their strategy too)

once the switch has a solid install base (which its already very on track to do) then they might try some new stuff
