I'm doing some Christmas shopping for my wife. She currently has an HP Stream laptop and it's just been really shitty to her... slow to open, runs the disaster that is Windows 8, not even enough space on there to download Adobe Reader while also having Spotify, etc. It's kinda what you sign up for when you get a laptop with zero space on it, but yeah.

My ultimate thought is to get her a tablet for when she wants to sit on the couch or be mobile, preferably with a keyboard (maybe one of those things that doubles as a case and a keyboard?), and then someday build her a simple PC so she can really sit down at her desk and have a boatload of storage for old pics and vids and such. For now, though, thinking we'll start with the tablet as that will be more immediately useful to her.

For a relatively techy guy, I have seriously held a tablet like 5 times in my life, so I'm not familiar with that market at all. What do you guys like? I'll answer any questions regarding what I'm looking for if this is too vague.

For like $350 you can get a Lenovo that folds back and can be used as a tablet but actually has a mechanical HDD in the base so it's 500gb which is more than you'll get from any straight up tablet.

That's interesting. A bit more than I was thinking for the budget, but with a big HDD, probably wouldn't need the computer down the road. I'll consider that.

Are there good options in the $150-200 range for standard tablets?
