At one point, he told Bourmeche to enter an industrial-sized clothes dryer and turned the machine on, asking the recruit "Are you still Muslim?" After Bourmeche reaffirmed his faith, he was forced to enter the machine again, after which he once again confirmed he was a Muslim. He was then sent for another tumble inside the machine that is designed to emit intense heat. After a third spin, Bourmeche said, he feared for his life and renounced his religion. Rekan Hawez, a native of Iraqi Kurdistan, was also ordered to climb into the dryer, although the machine was never turned on. DISGUSTING --- I use Gameraven and you should too. ... Weird thing in this It's standard operating procedure. Typically officers who are found guilty of misconduct and forced to resign are demoted to the last paygrade in which they honorably served, and enlisted are busted down to the lowest possible paygrade. edit: I should clarify that officers and enlisted can also be reduced in rank by one or two paygrades as a form of non-judicial punishment, but for an officer that typically means the end of their career anyway, and for enlisted, it could also be the end of the career (depending on what their paygrade winds up being and what the high-year tenure limit is for that paygrade). It's not just a punishment that happens when someone is being kicked out. ... Copied to Clipboard!

But people like @HypnoCoosh said this doesnt happen in the military It's definitely not supposed to, which is why people are being punished for it. Bad things happen in a lot of organizations. Yeah :\ when it comes to non-judicial punishment, commanding officers have quite a bit of leeway typically. This is obviously beyond that but... yeah. Up until recently, Navy COs onboard ships could even restrict punished Sailors to a bread and water diet as punishment, but I think Congress is trying to get rid of that practice. I also don't know how often it was even used.

Why is this a shock considering the My Lai massacre? 1. I don't know why you'd even find it relevant to compare an incident from 1968 to something that happened in the last decade. 2. Even if that WERE somehow relevant, we're talking about a blue-on-blue incident in which people who were entrusted with the training of recruits who volunteered their lives completely abused that trust and drove at least one of those recruits to suicide. They are two vastly different incidents from two entirely different time periods. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Also, I still don't get why he's busted down to any paygrade at all, seems like a silly application of "standard" procedure to me. Yeah his career's basically over but in cases like this, you throw these people out, period. He has no business even being a private. Whole thing's so far beyond his status as a part of the military now. As Rhomber pointed out, he won't be discharged until after he serves his prison sentence. Since he will still technically be a part of the military, he still technically requires a rank, so they give him a low rank. Of course he violated civilian laws, but he also violated military laws and that is what he was charged under. ... Copied to Clipboard!
