Tomorrow I'm putting in my two weeks at my current job because I just got offered and accepted another. No one, save for like one guy, has any idea I'm about to put in my two weeks. Anyone have any experience with stuff like this? Did it go well? idk why, but I'm so nervous about this.

Don't be nervous, it's totally normal. As long as your manager has been in a managerial position for more than a few months, he's probably had someone bring it to him before.

That said, make sure you are 100% guaranteed the other job is a lock. The last thing you want to have happen is putting in your 2 weeks and then failing a drug test or background check or something.

Just pull your manager aside or send him an email and CC HR on it. 2 weeks notice is actually pretty informal. It doesn't really "lock" you into leaving at the end of those two weeks, it's just a pleasantry that keeps you from being like "FUcK YOU ALL" and walking out the door leaving everyone to pick up the scraps of your responsibilities.

In my case, my former boss actually let me turn my 2 weeks into a 1 week because I mentioned wanting to have a full week off between jobs as a mini-vacation.

No need to be nervous at all, this thing happens on a daily basis.

Just give it in, they may want to do an exit interview or something like that, just be honest and tell them you found a better job. If they don't like it, it's not like they can do anything about it other than get rid of you two weeks earlier than you planned.

Just bring a paper in. Type out that you're thankful for the opportunity to work there, and that you have decided to take your life in another direction. Sign it. Then tomorrow ask to have a brief meeting with your manager. Give them the paper and explain what's going on. Then work your last two weeks and your good.

ive done this before, it's really no big deal. people change jobs all the time.

1. make sure the other job is guaranteed as someone else here said. like you have a formal offer and all that which is accepted

2. ask your boss for a meeting, let them know you've found a position and want to give in your formal 2 week notice, ask how you can help in the transition process etc. you'll probably have to have a formal email written to your boss & HR

3. do your job as usual and any transition stuff

4. you'll probably have an exit interview with your boss before you leave. write an email to your boss + team at the end, thank them all for the experience, leave your email to keep in touch, add your cool coworkers on linkedin, etc

5. do not burn any bridges, even if the job is shit. don't get offended if someone has to walk you out of the building on your last day because that is company policy

Alright thanks for the support guys. I already signed the offer letter and still have to do the background check, so I'll wait until that's over before I say anything. Yeah idk, this is my first, post college job and I've only been here for 6 months and yet it feels like forever and I've made so many friends here. That's why it's tough to put in my two weeks I guess, but have to do it with confidence.

Well it's not like you can't be friends with them after you quit...neither your friends/coworkers nor your employer will really give a fuck if you quit tbh. The employer will replace you, and your friends/coworkers would still keep in touch with you if you were really that close

Haha true that my man. I talked to the guy I would consider my best friend there today about it and he almost said the same thing. He was like, dude we'll still be friends and we can hangout still. He even told me he was putting in his two weeks soon, so that made me feel better. Definitely feel more at ease now.

sometimes it's fine, sometimes they're dicks
one time I got escorted off the premises by security and was told not to come back, but they paid me my full two weeks so that was pretty sweet

If you put in your two weeks where I work now, they will just tell you not to come in for the rest of the time.

Previously, yeah I just told upper management that I was offered a higher salary with more growth potential

My two-weeks notice at my last job was literally a piece of paper with "This is my two-weeks notice." written on it, signed and dated.

I know some people get obsessive over making it as cushion-y as possible but, ultimately, no amount of pleasantries and praise changes the fact that they're losing you in two weeks. Perhaps if I cared about that place I'd have done more, but I'd kill myself before going back there.

This. Also be sure to make a copy with their signature on the notice in case they want to be petty and say they fired you.

is this really that weird?

if you work with sensitive stuff I can see them wanting to get rid of you right away once you're basically already "leaving", the security is probably just policy thing even if you aren't making any trouble

Some guys at work have been escorted out because they went to go work for a competitor.

it's a little funny that the protocol was in place because you needed a secret clearance to work there, but I now hold a top secret clearance level

you walk in and say "Hi, I'd like to let you know that I accepted a job somewhere and I start on X date and this is my 2 weeks notice." and then your manager might try to make small talk and be like "oh, neat, where at? We're gonna miss you" at which point you should respond, or (s)he might just be like "ok, thanks for letting me know" and then you can leave and it's over.
