Poll of the Day > Once upon a time, people had to have their photos ''developed'' by strangers

People took personal private photos of themselves, on a roll of film, and then gave these private sometimes intimate photos to a complete stranger to have them developed.

I thought nothing of it as a kid but One Hour Photo opened my eyes to how terrifying the idea is.

You could be taking erotic photos of your wife naked, and the only way to get them if you didn't have your own studio is to give them to some stranger who was going to see all those pictures.

The kids today with their camera internet phones don't even realize what life was like in before times.

Yes, and Robin Williams was in a movie about it that wouldn't make sense to people that are very young

Yeah, someone I know many moons ago was asked during an interview for a job in a one hour photo place if "you are okay with dealing with photos of a pornographic nature", as it was something that you just had to work with on occasion. No way of telling what was going to be on the film.

I also recall one place having a sign hung up that stated that the employees would see all photos being developed. Have to wonder what in the hell they saw that warranted the sign. Either they needed to call the cops on someone, or someone got irrationally angry that the employees saw nude pictures of them.

By they you mean the random workers at the photo hut? Because that's way creepier tbimoh. Also the fact that they might keep the negatives.

Yeah it does and has a following. I have an old canon camera that was given to me that takes really great photos but I never use it because digital is just easier.

Related note, a guy in my town was on the news last night. He works at a phone repair store, and saw some nudes on someone's phone and decided to send them to his phone. But the owner got a notification of the transfer..

less people probably took photos like that back and likely because of this reason. to those saying "get a polaroid" not everyone had money to toss around. my family had one so I know they likely weren't super expensive but while poor we weren't just barely scraping by poor.

They still need to take their SD card to a photo shop if they want it developed and they don't own a photo printer. Thankfully the photo shop near me has a kiosk where I just pop the card in, select what I want, insert cash and then boom.

i work in the photo lab (well, photo print centre i guess, it's all electronic) at work often. i can't say i've seen anything untoward, but then, i guess people don't bother with that stuff anymore when you've got smartphones and computers.

A big part of it was also the difficulty of sharing them. Sexting is an instantaneous form of flirtation, which taking nude photos on film just couldn't be. For long-distance relationships, you could take photos, have them developed, then mail them (or scan and email, in the rather short period where scanners are practical to have at home, but digital cameras weren't), but that was the closest you could get. Most nude pictures would have been a collaborative effort.

There's also the fact that people just plain take more pictures now. It's far, far more practical to keep a thousand vacation pictures on a single SD card than to have to bring 42 rolls of film along on a trip. Photography strategies have also changed because of how immediately you get feedback with a digital shot, and how easily you can take several similar shots and pick your favourite. That's also why selfies have become a thing, since with a film camera you really can't do the sort of trial-and-error needed to get one you like (or have the screen and lens facing the same way, as became an option with flip-out screens, and later front cameras), and that's also been a huge boon for self-shot nude photos.

It's still cheaper to have high quality photos developed at a store most of the time, it's just you can do it yourself if you want to have something more private printed.

Although I rarely have photos printed at all anymore. Only if I really want to hang it on a wall or something.
