The plan is obviously to eventually phase out the 3DS and shift all their support to the Switch. But first they need to ensure the Switch is a long term success, for which it's still far too early to call. If they throw all their chips on the Switch too early and it flops, they have nothing to fall back on. So they'll keep the 3DS alive until the Switch is a safe bet, so that if it flops they can fall back on the 3DS until they can throw together another console.

It's a relatively smart move. The 3DS is about 6 years old at this point, and these bastards love the 5 year retention cycle on hardware, meaning that they'll shift focus away from it and onto other hardware platforms after that period. They're overdue, honestly.

Yeah, I still have my SP, and it was my first handheld system that was mine. Before that, it was just a hand me down OG Gameboy. So letting that go is going to be hard. It was so nice just being able to stick it in my bag.

Maybe. It's the first year, so I wouldn't say it'll definitely go on sale especially considering it's Nintendo. At best I'd say there will probably be some deal like "Buy a Switch and get one of select games free" or something.
