I mean at least hockey is the closest thing to a regular scoring system like football or soccer. You score a goal, that's one point. Touchdowns are 6 points because a field goal is worth 3 (half) and safeties are worth 2 (a third). 6 is the lowest number to break down into a halves and thirds. For example, if you made a single goal in basketball to be 1 point, then what is a three pointer? 2 points? That's double the points of 1, instead of just 50% more like in the 2 > 3 version. Similarly in football you have plays that give you 1, 2, 3, and 6 points.
