What is the fork

Should I wait until the bubble bursts and then buy some and catch it on the rebound

Might as well buy in now and get some of the gains we will see going into the fork.

The "Fork" will split the blockchain into two chains. One is likely to lose an incredible amount of value.

No matter what it means (no one truly knows), it's a circumstance of extreme risk and uncertainty. It's like raising in poker without even looking at your cards. A 100% gamble.

it's an attack on bitcoin where it splits, bitcoin gold was the last one that barely made a dent in bitcoin but it did drop the price for a few days. this is one of the most powerful forks so far so I see a big drop for at least a week

save your cash until the second half of november

Okay, but why does the Fork happen? Are these regularly scheduled events or something? I don't get it.

Say I paid you $5000 in BTC.

I'm oversimplifying things here, but a blockchain is essentially "majority rule" in the sense that if more people want to switch to a ledger where I didn't make that payment, they could. That would make a fork, because people would have to choose whether to continue with the ledger where I paid or the other one.

The cases where this actually happens is where people want to change something about how bitcoin works, so you tend to have some purpose that a lot of people can get on board with.
