For Switch at least.

Breath of the Wild is a fantastic game, but at its core it's a game designed for a 5 year old console. I know people loved exploring the world, but it gets absolutely BTFO by Odyssey in visuals just by virtue of Mario taking full advantage of the hardware.

Music too, just because of the artistic direction, Odyssey has the benefit of actually having songs that are actually memorable instead of just being ambience like BotW opted for.

There's a lot of subjective other stuff too, but that's all up for debate.

I agree.

I never felt BotW was limited in any way design wise. It's a fantastic, groundbreaking game for the series.

But to me SMO is a crowning achievement of 3D mario. In the same way, SMW didn't necessarily break new ground, but polished the formula set out by the 2D games in a way that had never been done before, SMO does that for 3D. Nintendo truly mastered 3D Mario in a way they've been chasing since SM64

Eh. I've put ~350 hours into BotW. SMO is definitely a good game, but it just doesn't have half the hook BotW did for me. I've only played SMO once since last weekend, whereas I played BotW literally every day for a month after its release. Gonna have to disagree.

Between the two of them, graphics are the big distinguishing factor. It's not the only factor, and most PC games that trash Odyssey are trash in every other regard, so oh well.
