There's literally no reason to other than to be an edgelord dipshit.

The only exception I can even think of is for "coon skin cap", because that colloquial name with that word has become directly tied to the specific style of hat, but even then the phrase doesn't lose anything by just saying "racoon" instead.

Basically,

Because it's not a "shortened version", and it never was; it is a slur and it became extremely common around the war and featured prominently in all sorts of wildly racist media.

the same happened to speedy gonzales. whites were complaining it was a racist stereotype of us mexicans, and his cartoons were pulled. this went on for a while until actual mexicans began to complain about the removal.

basically, the us (its residents, mostly the whites) are getting offended on behalf of the supposed offended, without the actual "offended" even knowing it.
remember that magazine that took pics of a white girl wearing a kimono in a session? the shitstorm it caused on social networks? calling it racist, insensitive, and wrongful cultural apropiation? about that....
guess who DIDNT give a shit? the japanese. both overseas and in japan. (and this is very well documented, google it)

I remember having no idea "J" was a racial slur until I lazil used i while texting shorthand and somebody told me lol.

Ive yet to hear an actual Japanese person's input on it but I'm not so attached to the word I feel any great loss in just texting "JP" instead lol.

But related to the topic, anyone want to weigh in on if "spook" can be used in an innocuous context without raising eyebrows? Its a kind of a weird thing that can be used to refer to ghosts, CIA agents, and as a racial slur. Not that I use it frequently but now its on my mind. >_>

since when is spook a racial slur?
you people need to stop having this moral inferiority complex regarding words and terms.
its like someone who says african american to exclusively refer to blacks. thats completely incorrect as there are 3 majors races in africa. arabs predominantly in the nort, blacks across all of africa and and whites in the south.
so if a naturally born white african moves to the us, youre not gonna call him african american? why not?, hes more african american than a 5th generation black that was born in new orleans.

so stop saying that term and call black people black. seriously..

no its not. its not even remotely close. even japanese, at least those versed in history (or saw any US movie where the word is used negatively like Django), know N is a very offensive word and they refrain from using it. however, J isnt. its no offensive to them, its not offensive to anyone outside the US.
we use it in mexico, except add an O at the end because japanese is japones in spanish. even the japanese community here (in my city, but im well aware this is nationwide) use the shortening for convenience.

Sorry, I've never been outside America. I live in Hawaii and visit California fairly frequently, and in both places it is very offensive. Especially in Hawaii, since a large part of the population is Japanese.

But not offensive to them? I can only only speak for myself, but from what a quick Google search pulls up...

"In 2003, the Japanese deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Yoshiyuki Motomura, protested the North Korean ambassador's use of the term in retaliation for a Japanese diplomat's use of the term "North Korea" instead of the official name, "Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

In 2011, following the term's offhand use in a March 26 article appearing in The Spectator ("white-coated J** bloke"), the Minister of the Japanese Embassy in London protested that "most Japanese people find the word 'J***' offensive, irrespective of the circumstances in which it is used"

any word can be racist if you give it the power to be so.

reminds me of the word preto in portuguese.
it is extremely offensive BUt at the same time it isnt.

and this is comes from my family member who has lived in brazil for 50 years:

preto mean dark (as in, color, not flat out black). it is a very commonly used word in brazil, and theres even places called preto there. where my family member and his family lives is called rio preto (dark river).
heres the shyamalayaman twist: you call a black there N and he wont even understand you, but call him preto and its the equivalent of N. this only applies to calling blacks that. any other use of the word and its automatically not offensive.

language is such a complex issue.

But if he's not aware of what the word means or its malicious intent, then why would he be offended? J** isn't just some common everyday word either; it's a slur that has no other meaning but to insult the Japanese.

But as I've said, even though I know the word is offensive, I don't care.

but unlike N, J is literally shortening for japanese. hell, youre actually saying it AND writing it when you say/write japanese. its only "offensive" because it was used in ww2 and the US were the victors, demonizing the shortening.
well, if thats the case, why isnt kraut, jerry and... posh? (bosh? help me on this one) as offensive as J, since they serve the same purpose but arent even shortenings for german/aleman/deutsche?
anyway, i just remember i asked my bf to lend me his copy of cod 5 on wii so im off to play it and kill me some Js and krauts.

A word doesn't need to be completely different to be a slur, and just because it's in a word doesn't make it any better.

And some people do feel kraut is offensive. Clearly the admins here don't though. I don't know what the others are about though.

At any rate, you can't say that a word isn't offensive just because people don't find it offensive. I mean if that was the case rap would've made the N-word into polite conversation material by now.

I mean if that was the case rap would've made the N-word into polite conversation material by now.

it is polite conversation between blacks.
story time: a long time ago there was this family of blacks living 3 houses from me. everyone knew them because they were... well, black. in mexico (in my city, duh). anyway, the two eldest sons, aged 17 and 16, used the word all the time in their conversations. and the dad was a huge history buff. they had a black labrador named N (yes, that N, not the letter) to, in his words "honor the memory of N, the mascot of the dam busters who tragically died before their biggest operation" (this is were i learned about this dog). so it became very common to hear him yell "N!" "COME HERE N!" when they were playing with N on the street (its a semi-private residential area, its common to have kids play on the street). they had no problem with any of us saying N out loud IF we referred to the dog. and to my surprise, N developed a liking to me, so every other day i would go to their house and ask to let me play with N. moslty because i didnt have pets back then and N was the only dog that was actually friendly in the neighborhood.

Once again, I must reiterate my entire point that this doesn't make the word any less offensive. It doesn't affect them just as the J-word doesn't affect me, but it's still considered inappropriate. Although to be honest, just shouting the N-word down the street to call your dog is in pretty poor taste. It's a word that people generally don't like to hear thrown around casually regardless of its target, especially when kids are around.

Why is anything offensive really? Like why is the c word offensive? It's just another word for the vagina. I've pretty much given up looking for an answer to why certain words are offensive and just accepted that some people don't like to hear them.
