the entire tail end of Gillespie's campaign has been that Northam is weak on illegal immigrants and in favor of sanctuary cities. there are ads equating illegal immigrants to MS-13 playing on VA radio stations, and people are pissed off about it. that's why him coming out and throwing a bone to the hard-on-immigration crowd is such a WTF moment, especially given the makeup of northern VA

Given the choice between a Republican and a Republican-lite, people will tend to choose the genuine thing. Any voter who might be swayed by a move like this is voting for the New Jersey guy campaigning on keeping up Confederate statues
